Wildflower weekend planned at Pine Mt. Settlement School
      Pine Mountain Settlement School will host a wildflower weekend April 16 to 18. Nearly 100 species of spring wildflowers can be found on the school property. The weekend begins at 6 p.m. Friday with dinner, followed by a presentation by Marc Evans, retired senior ecologist with the Kentucky State Nature Preserves Commission, and a hike.

Fundraiser set at Hemphill
      A fundraiser will be held at the Hemphill Community Center for Letcher County Kentucky Ambassadors of Music students on Friday, March 13, from 7 until 10 p.m. Admission is $5. Music will be by Jeremy Paul Wright, Corey Michael Baker, Gary and Roger Amburgey, Judy Kincer, Jason Eckles, and John Fowler, and Tiff any Adams, with a special performance by the Millstone Methodist Youth Drama Team.

Fundraiser set
      The Letcher County Foster Parents Association will hold a fundraiser this month and in April with Narramore Photography. Participants will receive a 10x13 picture with each $15 sitting fee.       The district spelling bee was held February 19. Each Letcher County elementary school and middle school was represented, with student on grades kindergarten through eight participating.       The Letcher County Extension Office now has applications for garden seeds provided by the Letcher County Food Pantry. Applications may be picked up from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. You must be a resident of Letcher County to participate. One application per household. Applications must be signed and returned no later than March 15.

      A spaghetti lunch and dinner will be served at the McRoberts Recreational Center from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m. on March 12. The meal includes spaghetti, coleslaw, raw and dessert. Kentucky landowners, gas drilling firms settle lawsuit
      LOUISVILLE A federal judge has approved a $28.75 million settlement between more than 8,000 eastern Kentucky landowners and a group of natural gas drilling companies in a dispute over royalty payments. The class-action settlement released Thursday ends more than two years of litigation over royalties from drilling in Martin and Pike counties.

      FRANKFORT The Senate has unanimously passed a bill that would allow school boards to meet privately with superintendents to discuss preliminary job evaluations. Republican state Sen. David Givens of Greensburg is championing the measure, which now goes to the House for consideration. The 38-0 Senate vote came on Tuesday.

Dinosaurs to visit Louisville Zoo
      LOUISVILLE Dinosaurs will be invading the Louisville Zoo this week. A statement from the zoo says 16 gigantic dinosaurs including a Tyrannosaurus rex will be unloaded Wednesday for an exhibit called Dinosaurs Alive, which is scheduled to open later this month.

Jury clears man on assault charge after 3-day trial
      A Cowan man on trial for shooting his friend at fairly close range in the stomach with a shotgun was found not guilty of first-degree assault. After deliberating for nearly three hours on March 3, a Letcher County jury found Gary Wayne Boggs Jr., 25, of 2165 Bo Fork, not guilty.

Assault victim says two men responsible for park damage
      Preliminary hearings are set for later this month for two Letcher County men accused of vandalizing a community park at Thornton. Ronald Brian Adams, 20, of 610 Yonts Fork, Jackhorn, and Joshua L. Sizemore, 20, of 62 Sizemore Drive, Premium, were arrested March 3 after police linked the men to an assault case.

      Kentuckians who have taken the GED test since last July and received at least a 2700 composite score may apply for a Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship. The scholarships, worth up to $1,500 per year, are administered by the Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority (KHEAA).
