Pageant Winner
     PAGEANT WINNER - Fifteenmonth old Maysa Annette Adams was crowned supreme winner for most beautiful and best personality in the 4th of July Beauties and Cuties Pageant held July 14 at the Whitesburg VFW. She is the daughter of Eddie and Paulla Adams of Ermine. She has five brothers and sisters, Jonathan, Amanda, and Summer Adams, and Tanner and McQuade Walters.

Receives Medal
     RECEIVES MEDAL - Technical Sgt. Shawn Damron, with the 791st Missile Security Forces Squadron stationed at Minot Air Force Base in Minot, N.D., has been in the Air Force almost 20 years. He is a 1985 graduate of Jenkins High School and is the son of Jackie Damron of Jenkins and Doug Damron of McRoberts. He recently received a commendation medal for developing a mobile radar surveillance and detection system to be used in protection of Intercontinental Ballistic Missile systems, saving the Air Force hundreds of thousands of dollars. Pictured with him are his sisters, Betsy Addington of Burdine (left), and Lisa Wiley of King, N.C., who visited him for his 40th birthday on July 4. They also toured the Air Force base and a buffalo ranch and visited the International Peace Gardens in Canada. Also making the trip were nieces Samantha and Brittany Wiley, and Summer Powers and husband David and son Bryce of Jenkins.

      By GLADYS SMITH We awoke to a hot, humid, stormy day here in the Carolinas. Every day it is a blazing sun. I have two air conditioners and three fans going and am still hot. My body isn't taking the heat as well as usual. I sure hated to hear of Hobart Elkins's death. He was a nice man.

Bud Arnold marks 71st birthday with 2 cakes
      Richard Brown of Jeremiah, was in a bad wreck on Hwy. 7 early Thursday morning. He hit a tree and had to be flown out to the University of Kentucky Hospital. He fractured his neck and hurt his leg and had to have surgery on it. They are not sure, but he might have to have surgery on his neck. He has been on a ventilator and as of Saturday was still in ICU.

      B.J., Shanna, Miss Em and Gavin Adams of Carcassonne, went to Virginia Saturday evening to attend a wedding. Tara, the daughter of Rory Blair of Vicco and Loretta Mullins of Tennessee, was married. This news is from Mary Campbell. The Floyd and Rebecca Back reunion was held July 14.

      Applications are being accepted through August 31 for delayed admission into the Community based Research Education in Eastern Kentucky (CREEK) Program. CREEK introduces health-related research skills to students in rural Appalachia in sociology, anthropology, education, nursing, communication and social work to explore the behavioral aspects of health and illness.

      Another week has come and gone too, too fast. Howdy all, hope your week was a happy and peaceful one. We finally got some much needed rain. A good one this time but almost too late. Red did pick quite a few beans. We have them on the stove, getting ready to let them bubble, then cool for freezing. We should have two or three large bags.

Vendors sought for festival
      The Jenkins Homecoming Days Festival Committee is accepting applications for crafters and vendors. The festival will take place in the Jenkins City Park August 23-25. Space is available and will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. Fees for spaces will start at $50 for the entire three-day event.

In the Chorus
     IN THE CHORUS - Hannah Harris, 12, a seventh-grade student at Beaumont Middle School in Lexington, went with fellow chorus classmates to Washington, D.C., to represent Kentucky at the National Anthem Project. The chorus performed a concert at the Lincoln Memorial and presented a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington, Va. They also sang the national anthem at the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium to the accompaniment of the Drum Corps International group. She is the daughter of Mike and Laura Harris of Lexington, and the granddaughter of Robert and Ramona Caudill of Little Cowan, and James and Genette Hurd of Lexington.

Tryouts set
      Tryouts for the Mountain Outreach Idol Contest will be held at 6 p.m., Friday, July 27, at the Jenkins Public Library. The contest is part of the upcoming Jenkins Festival. Judges will pick six contestants who will perform each night of the festival, with the audience voting for their favorites each night. The winning contestant will receive a cash prize.

ATV ride planned for Sun., July 29
      The Letcher County Mountain Crawlers' all-terrain vehicle (ATV) ride at Black Mountain Sunday, July 29, will benefit Shop-With-A-Cop. All donations will go to provide Christmas for underprivileged children. Riders will meet at the Pine Mountain Grill parking lot at 9 a.m. Those 16 and under must wear a helmet.

Kids' Day planned at River Park
      Letcher County Kids' Day will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., July 27, at Whitesburg River Park. School supplies and lunch will be provided. The free event will include face painting, a magic show, fire truck and train rides, pony rides, a watermeloneating contest, a moon walk, a karate show, a carousel, a waterslide, and a dunking booth.

Road Trip
     ROAD TRIP - Jacqueline McCall of Seco, daughter of Teresa McCall and the late Jackie McCall, recently took a trip to Nashville, Tenn. She visited the sights including the state capitol and the zoo. She is a student at Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College, and is the granddaughter of Don and Jean Bentley of Seco.
