Girls fall one game short of state title
      Fleming-Neon made its mark but came up one game short of the Junior League State Softball Tournament title last week at Charlie Adkins Field in Paintsville. The Fleming-Neon 13- and 14-year-old all-stars had already been stricken with flulike symptoms, so a second-place state tourney trophy didn't seem so bad after all was said and done.

Football practices already underway
      Football lovers, especially of our high schools, may be surprised to learn that preseason practice is already under way. Yes, I know, the weather is brutal and that's why I am writing my annual "please be careful" column. Physicals, water and rest periods are key words.

NASCAR pauses for deep breath
      The Nextel Cup Series enjoyed its final open week of the season this past weekend before embarking on the stretch run of the schedule that will not only set the drivers for the Chase but also eventually crown this year's champion.

Wildcat fans excited this year
      As we enter the backside of another summer and draw closer to another college sports season, I can't recall another year that the entire Wildcat Nation fan base in the big four sports of football, men's and women's basketball, and baseball, as excited as they are going into the 2007-08 college sports year.

All Stars
     ALL STARS - The Fleming-Neon 11- and 12-year-old All Stars won the District 7 Little League Tournament, defeating Whitesburg 7-6, HAP 15-2, Prestonsburg 8-1, Morgan County 12-7, and Paintsville 2-1 in extra innings. They advanced to the Little League State Tournament in Bowling Green. The team roster consists of seven 12-year-olds, Blake Knight, Tim Seals, Cody Sexton, Cody Holland, Jordan Short, Ethan Hogg, and Dakota Tackett, as well as four 11-year-olds, Samuel Robinson, Nick King, Randy Potter, and Tyler Dishman. The team is coached by Billy Knight, Tim Seals, and David Robinson.

Blue Chip Campers
     BLUE CHIP CAMPERS - Six Letcher County middle school basketball players recently attended Rick Bolus' High Potential Blue Chip Basketball Camp in Georgetown. They competed against some of the best talent in several states and finished runners-up in the final day tournament.
