As we go to press, six coal miners remain trapped in Murray Energy's Crandall Canyon Mine, near Huntington, Utah. Nothing has been heard from them since a portion of the mine caved in on August 6, and the heartbreakingly slow efforts to reach them have yielded no sign of whether they are alive. More ... WASHINGTON Karl Rove and I have something in common: Both of us treasure a campaign poster from the 1972 elections. The poster, which Rove hung in his Texas political consulting office, was from the re-election campaign of Illinois Gov. Richard Ogilvie, a reform-minded Republican moderate. It was adorned with the slogan: "Charisma Isn't Everything. More ... One of the less pleasant debates in Washington has been over SCHIP. The State Children's Health Insurance Program covers children whose families make too much money to qualify for Medicaid but not enough to afford their own coverage. In other words, it's for the working stiffs. More ... Imagine if the World Series started on the Fourth of July, while everyone was barbecuing and no one but the sportswriters had any idea who was on first. That's what this presidential campaign is beginning to resemble. Fred Thompson has been through three campaign managers, and he has yet to declare. More ... Recently Ernie Fletcher called for a special legislative session to promote technology for converting coal to synthetic fuel. Initially Jody Richards and the Democratic leadership in the House showed a little backbone and rejected this politically motivated idea. But of course, that was far too much to expect. More ... |
