Death toll in Iraq reaches 3,707
      As of Monday, Aug. 20, 2007, at least 3,707 members of the U.S. military have died since the beginning of the Iraq war in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count. The figure includes seven military civilians. At least 3,049 died as a result of hostile action, according to the military's numbers.

Whitesburg residents soon will have new cable TV provider
      Most Whitesburg residents should have a new cable-television provider by the end of the month, officials say. Comcast, the nation's largest cable company, is expected to complete the sale of its Whitesburg franchise to TV Service Inc. of Hindman by the end of August.

Police say furniture stolen from house
      Two Camp Branch residents were arrested last week by the Kentucky State Police after police recovered furniture stolen from a home. Liddy Hall, 35, and John Paul "Dewey" Wells, 25, both of 4777 Thornton Road, were charged with receiving more than $300 in stolen property. Hall was arrested on August 15 and Wells was arrested on August 19.

Miners say firm wouldn't stop boss from harassing them
      A discrimination complaint filed with a federal agency earlier this year by two Letcher County coal miners has wound its way back to the state level in the form of a lawsuit charging sexual harassment.

Water, sewer projects focus of tour
More than 10 years of progress seen between Blackey and Millstone
      New commissioners for the Letcher County Water & Sewer District were given a site tour of past and current projects the district has carried out. Evan Smith, coordinator for the "Letcher County: Head of Three Rivers Project," organized the August 16 tour which visited sites ranging from Blackey to Millstone.
