Jenkins routs Allen Central in opener
      After a slow start, the Jenkins Cavaliers finished strong for a big win against the Allen Central Rebels in last Friday's season opener. "A hot, muggy evening with temperatures in triple digits contributed to the sluggish start," said Cavaliers coach Mark Johnson. "The bus ride at an hour and a half and 100-degree temperature caused our guys to start off flat.

      You can't fool football fans of the Universities of Louisville and Kentucky. They know an opening game when they see one - and fans of the Wildcats and Cardinals are not going to see any openers this week. Or next week, for that matter.

Cougars should rebound from loss
      Keith Howard Well, it's finally here. It's football time in the mountains and the Letcher County Central Cougars began their season this past weekend with a loss to the boys from Hazard. The Cougars have moved from Class 3A to Class 5A after the realignment, and instead of there being four classes there are now six.

This wasn't the Bristol we know
      Steve Mickey I know the schedule said Bristol Motor Speedway, but what we saw Saturday night from the newly-repaved high-banked half-mile track wasn't the Bristol we grew up with. latest edition of racing from the Tennessee track has us scratching our heads as to what happened to the "old" Bristol.

Knott basketball leagues to begin
      Youth basketball leagues will begin Oct. 15 in the Knott County Sportsplex sponsored by the Knott County Youth Foundation. There will be six divisions: Mini All-stars for boys and girls ages 4-6, Little Champions for boys and girls ages 7-8, a girls' and boys' semi-pro league for ages 9-10, and a girls' and boys' pro-division for ages 11-12.
