Latest Kentucky state news from The Associated Press:

Attempted murder charge filed after fight at club

An investigation that began on July 6 after two men got into a fight at the American Legion in Neon ended last week when one of the two was charged with attempted murder.

The charge was filed against 44- year-old Kenneth Meade on July 18 by Kentucky State Police Detective Chris Collins - 12 days after Meade obtained a citizen's warrant charging 45-year-old Ernie Yonts of Neon with misdemeanor assault for hitting Meade in the head with a beer bottle.

According to a criminal complaint filed by Detective Collins, Meade, who lives in the Mountain Pride Apartments at Jackhorn, "committed the offense of attempted murder when he shot Ernie Yonts in the leg with a firearm." Collins also wrote in the complaint that "Yonts stated that he saw Kenneth shoot at him."

Collins presented Meade with a warrant charging him with attempted murder after Meade appeared in Letcher District Court to answer a charge of first-degree possession of a controlled substance. The drug charge was filed by Detective Collins on July 6 after police said they found two tablets of the painkiller oxycodone while searching Meade's apartment during an investigation into the shooting of Yonts.

Meade was released from the Letcher County Jail last Wednesday after posting a $10,000 property bond. He is scheduled to appear at a preliminary hearing in Letcher District Court on August 1.

Yonts was scheduled to appear in district court today (Wednesday) to answer the fourth-degree assault charge which has been filed against him.
