Workers visiting homes as part of E-911 project
Don't be alarmed if you see a Letcher County E-911 worker in your neighborhood, says the agency's director.
E-911 workers are going to each residence in the county to record Global Positioning System (GPS) readings from satellites to help improve the county's emergency response system. The project will make it possible for physical addresses to be located when 911 calls are made from cellular telephones.
E-911 Director Brandon Conley doesn't want residents to be scared when they see county workers on their property since readings have to be taken close to the front door of each 911 address.
Conley said workers will be driving a white Ford Bronco with "Letcher County E-911" painted professionally on the doors. The vehicle has a yellow light on top. If residents are suspicious, workers will be carrying E-911 photo identification.
Conley is asking residents to put house numbers in a visible location that can be seen from the road.
Conley said the GPS readings should take four to six months to complete and will be of no cost to the public.
