BURGLARY AT MAYKING - A Jenkins City Police cruiser sat in front of the Dollar General Store at Mayking early Tuesday morning after a break-in was reported. Jenkins officer Anthony Maggard stood guard at the store through the early morning hours after the front door was damaged and could not be locked. See story on Page 11. Kentucky suffered its first mine fatality of 2008 this week when a Letcher County man was killed early Tuesday when he was thrown from a rock truck he was driving. Roy Douglas Sturgill II, 29, of Cowan, died of injuries he received when the truck he was driving backed over a steep embankment at Cumberland River Coal Company's Blue Ridge surface mine at Oven Fork. Funeral services for Avery Johnson, 65, of Seco, were held December 23 at Everidge Funeral Home. Burial was in the Haven of Rest Cemetery at Mayking. A son of the late Willie and Jane Adams Johnson, he was born in Letcher County. He died December 20 at Whitesburg Appalachian Regional Hospital.
