Hughes graduates
      Whitesburg native Jolene Hughes was graduated from Bellarmine University with a bachelor of science degree in clinical lab science. A 2001 graduate of Whitesburg High School, she is the daughter of Barbara Hughes and Hank Craft.

Day recognized as high honor student
      Allison Day of Whitesburg, was recognized by the University of the Cumberlands as a high honor student during the school's annual Honor's Day service. She is an elementary education major. High honor recognition is given to those students earning a 3.85 grade point average.

Organ recital planned at Whitesburg church
      An organ recital will be held at Graham Memorial Presbyterian Church at 3 p.m., Sunday, June 22. Church organist Robert C. Young will present a mixed program of classical music, old hymns, and spirituals. A reception will follow in the fellowship hall. The public is invited to attend. The church is located behind the Letcher County Courthouse at 18 Broadway, Whitesburg.

How I spent my vacation

      I took vacation last week and left Garrard County only for a few hours Saturday morning to run some errands in Richmond. I spent less money than I normally spend on gasoline and lunch during a work week and I'd bet that I had more fun and a better time overall than most people will have on their jaunts to nameyour favorite beach or Smoky Mountain plastic park.

EARNS DOCTORATE
      David R. Goode of Macon, Ga., recently received a doctorate of philosophy in chemistry from the University of Illinois, Champaign/Urbana. His dissertation was "Small Molecule Modulation of Caspase Enzymatic Activity". While at the university, he assisted in teaching chemistry and did research in seeking cures for various diseases. Songbird walk planned
      The Pine Mountain Trail Club and the Clinch Ranger District will host a birding walk along a section of the Pine Mountain Trail on Saturday, June 14. Join members of the Pine Mountain Trail Club and Forest Service staff on this moderately strenuous four-mile round-trip walk along a section of the Pine Mountain Trail to the old Meade homeplace at the head of Stacy Branch.

      Southeast Scholars representatives and students were guests recently of the Whitesburg Rotary Club. Sandy Brown, assistant coordinator, made a presentation to club members about the program and the students it serves beginning in the sixth grade. Upon completion of the program, students can attend Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College with tuition assistance.

Grandsons do much better at Sportsplex than grandmother

      Colson seniors had an enjoyable week. They went to Norton to the flea market, stopped at some yard sales, ate at Kentucky Fried Chicken and the Seco Winery. Opal really enjoyed the winery. Our center will be playing bingo on Mondays and Rook on Fridays.

Ermine seniors enjoy their trip to Pikeville
      This news from the Ermine Senior Citizens Center: Senior citizens from the Ermine Center went shopping at Pikeville Friday. We had 26 to go. We had a wonderful day although it was very hot. We shopped at Wal-Mart then went to Bob Evans for lunch. Some had breakfast. After lunch we shopped at Peeples, Dollar Tree, J.C. Penney's, and Magic Mart.

Camp held at Carcassonne
      Martha Watts of the Campbell's Branch Community Center, and the Carcassonne Community Center teamed up last week to hold a Carcassonne Day Camp June 3-7. Held at the historic Carcassonne School near Blackey, more than 27 children and numerous volunteers participated in presenting and teaching traditional arts and folkways.

      A Texas Hold'Em Tournament will be held at 7 p.m., June 21, at the Shriners Building in Whitesburg. The pot is guaranteed to be at least $1,500 with 50 percent going to first place, 30 percent to second place, and 20 percent to third place. Players must be 18 years old.

      Members of Future Leaders of Kentucky (FLOK) stand next to a 150-year-old white oak tree located in Lilley Cornett Woods. FLOK is part of a Cowan Community Action Group program to teach youth leadership and decision-making skills through life experiences. The group recently participated in a UNITE "Hooked on Fishing Day" at Fishpond Lake.
