Education, career workshops set
      Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College will present several workshops this month to inform the public about programs offered by the college and career opportunities. The sessions will be conducted by SKCTC's chief recruiter, Kim Maynard, and Shandeal Fields, administrative assistant for Career Pathways.

Jenkins to host movie in park
      The Jenkins City Planning Committee, in cooperation with the Letcher County Department of Parks and Recreation, will be hosting Movie Night In The Park on Friday, June 20, at the Jenkins City Park. The movie, sponsored by local businesses, will be presented at 8:30 p.m. Admission is free, and concessions will be available for a nominal charge.

Tomatoes disappear from Letcher restaurants, groceries after scare
      Restaurants and grocery stores in Letcher County have pulled tomatoes as a precaution since some tomatoes are thought be linked to a recent salmonella outbreak. "We pulled any tomatoes that we had in question when the recall came about," said Larry Whitaker, owner of Food World IGA.

County buys old grocery building, seeks input
      Now that the Letcher Fiscal Court has purchased property to build a recreation center, the court wants to know what people would like to have in the center. "We really want input on what citizens want," said Letcher County Judge/Executive Jim Ward. "We're going to be open for suggestions on what we want to include.

Sheriff makes drug arrests
      Three men and two women have been arrested on drug-trafficking charges by the Letcher County Sheriff's Office. All five are named in arrest warrants served on June 9 and June 10. Charges contained in the warrants were brought after those named allegedly sold drugs to confidential informants working with the sheriff's office.

Search ends after woman's body found
      A Mayking woman reported missing last Thursday was found dead near her home at Mayking late Sunday afternoon. The Letcher County Sheriff's Department says no foul play is suspected in the death of Debbie Hatton Bradshaw, whose body was found outside her home.

KY 113 will close Monday
      A small section of KY 113, at mile point 1.446, will be closed to all traffic for about six hours on Monday, June 16. "This is adjacent to the old Millstone Post Office and will only affect traffic between Millstone and Kona along KY 113," said Jay White, resident engineer with Highway District 12.

Annual Seedtime festival underway
Kathy Mattea will headline with June 14 concert at Letcher Central
      Tuesday marked the start of Seedtime on the Cumberland 2008, the 22nd annual celebration presented by Appalshop, which will continue through June 14. Headlining musical acts include Kathy Mattea, Darrell and Wayne Scott, and Jesse McReynolds and the Virginia Boys.

Hidden coal dust fire burns feet of boy, 8
      RADO SPRINGS, Colo. Firefighters say coal dust sparked an invisible fire that heated the soil to 800 degrees and burned the feet of an 8-year-old boy. Matt Bershinski walked into the fire last week as he was playing in a park. It melted a plastic clogs to one of his feet and left him with second-degree burns.

Coal-mining device from Flight 93 to be part of ship coming in 2012
      SHANKSVILLE, Pa. A crane used in coal mining at the southwestern Pennsylvania site where United Flight 93 crashed will be melted down and used to build a Navy ship. The ship will be called the USS Somerset after the county where the flight hijacked by terrorists crashed on Sept. 11, 2001.
