Man accused of selling poisonous snakes
      A 36-year-old Mayking man is scheduled to make his first appearance in court next week to answer nearly 80 charges filed against him after a two-year undercover investigation focusing on the illegal possession, importation and buying and selling of reptiles in Kentucky.

Rail crossing to close
      A CSX railroad crossing on KY 7 near Deane at the Knott/ Letcher County line will be closed for repairs on Wednesday, July 23. The road will be closed from 8 a.m. until 7 p.m., according to Jay Rutherford, CSX's Appalachian Division Roadmaster for Floyd, Knott, Letcher, and Perry counties.

      Letcher County is eligible to apply for funding support through The Center for Rural Development for an Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) mini-grant for strategic planning or implementation of a community development plan identified through an existing communitybased strategic plan.

Children attend nature camp at Hemphill
      Last week about 15 children were environmental investigators during the WildWoods Nature Camp held at Hemphill Community Center. Hannah R. Thompson, 28, of Deep Run, N.C., for the past six years has held a nature camp for children in Letcher County.

Beshear wants license plate that says 'In God We Trust'
      FRANKFORT Gov. Steve Beshear said he will seek legislation authorizing an "In God We Trust" auto li- cense plate when lawmakers return to Frankfort early next year. Beshear wants Kentucky drivers to be able to choose the license plate as an alternative to the current "Unbridled Spirit" plate the state issues.

Drought still a threat to Letcher County despite recent rains
      Despite recent rain showers over the past few weeks, Letcher County is still considered to be in the beginning stages of a drought, according to Brian Schoettmer, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Jackson. "As of now, Letcher County is under 'D0' or abnormally dry conditions," said Schoettmer.

      Officials do not know why six people became ill Friday afternoon at a Whitesburg restaurant. Whitesburg and Hazard firefighters conducted air quality readings and tested for carbon monoxide inside the Long John Silver's Seafood Shoppe after five employees and one customer experienced headaches, dizziness and nausea on July 11.

      PRESTONSBURG, Ky. Some eastern Kentuckians are getting paid for unburied treasures that have been sitting out in plain sight for years. The high price being paid for scrap metal has inspired some folks to clean up the region, which has a chronic problem with improper disposal.

New federal prison helps create housing boom in W.Va. county
      WELCH, W.Va. Jobs at a new federal prison and in coal mines are fueling a need for housing in one of West Virginia's poorest counties. Joe Hatfield, executive director of the state Housing Development Fund, says the agency is working with area builders to develop 30 housing sites on Tom's Mountain in Welch.

Letcher County sees rise in tourism revenue for 2007
      Senator Johnny Ray Turner, DDrift, says tourism in Letcher County increased 6.1% percent in 2007 and added $15,526,692 to the county's economy. The statistics were released by the Kentucky Department of Travel and based on an annual report compiled by the Travel Industry Association (TIA) in Washington D.C.

Law clerk interns at county office
      As a part of the Rural Drug Prosecution Assistance Project, the Letcher County Commonwealth's attorney's office has received a law clerk for the summer. The grant is through the U.S. Department of Justice. Mark Rouse of Lexington, is a second-year student at the University of Kentucky College of Law.
