For the second time in less than two weeks, a Letcher County woman charged with murder denies any involvement in the crime other than helping hide the body. The latest denial comes from Rosemary McClain, who is being tried in Letcher Circuit Court this week for the 2005 murder of her best friend, Lisa Jenkins. More...

Letcher County's unemployment rate fell slightly in July even though 38 fewer people held jobs here than in the month before. According to statistics released this week by Kentucky Office of Employment and Training, 8,128 Letcher County residents held jobs last month compared with 8,166 in June, dropping the county's jobless rate from 7.8 percent to 7.6 percent. The Letcher County Breastfeeding Support Group meets on first Thursday of each month at 12:30 p.m. at the Harry M. Caudill Library in Whitesburg. Funeral services for Shirley Blevins Combs, 84, were held August 21 at Everidge Funeral Home. Burial was in Green Acres Cemetery at Ermine.
