School board declares plumbing at Fleming-Neon an emergency
      The Letcher County Board of Education voted this week to spend more than $150,000 on plumbing repairs at Fleming- Neon Elementary School after Supt. Anna C. Craft warned that the situation was "critical." "We've got to get the plumbing fixed or we are going to be shut down," Craft said.

Wreck on KY 15 fatal to Jeremiah woman
      Funeral services are scheduled to be held today (Wednesday) for a 56-year-old Jeremiah woman who was killed in a traffic accident at Van earlier this week. Wanda Jean Akers, of Spring Branch, died of injuries she received after the car she was driving was involved in a head-on collision at approximately 3:55 p.m. on Sunday.

Three students receive Crawford Scholarships
      The winners of the fall 2008 semester Roy R. Crawford Memorial College Scholarships given by Elkhorn-Hazard Coal Land, LLC are Justin Garrett Hunsucker, Amber Wurschmidt, and Amber LaShae Watts. Justin Garrett Hunsucker, son of Jody and Sandy Holbrook of Jenkins, was graduated from Jenkins High School in 2008. He was ranked first in his class with a 4.

PRIDE gives $6,500 grant for environmental education in Letcher County schools
      In Letcher County, 1,300 students will gain hands-on experience in good stewardship practices during the school year, thanks to $6,500 in PRIDE Environmental Education Grants. PRIDE grants totaling $235,760 were awarded to 70 schools and nonprofit organizations across 38 counties in southern and eastern Kentucky. In Letcher County, there were two grant recipients.

Photo displays planned
      The Fleming-Neon Days Committee and the Whitesburg Days Committee are planning pictorial displays along the Main Streets in their communities in conjunction with this year's Mountain Heritage Festival theme of "Making Tracks Thru Letcher County.

Union calls for ban on belt shafts for ventilation
      CHARLESTON, W.Va. The United Mine Workers renewed its long-standing call for a federal ban on using conveyer belt shafts to ventilate underground coal mines Tuesday. The federal Mine Safety and Health Administration has allowed mines to use belt air for years and proposed rules would allow mines to continue the practice, which the labor union calls inherently dangerous.

Enrollment is up in Jenkins schools
      Enrollment in the Jenkins Independent school district grew significantly this year, from 514 students in three elementary schools and one middle high school to 550. The latest enrollment figures were presented to the Jenkins Independent Board of Education at its August meeting on Monday night by Director of Pupil Personnel Harvey Tackett.

Two held after drug raid
      A Letcher County man and woman were arrested on drug trafficking charges after pills, drug paraphernalia and a small Teletubbies doll were confiscated from a Payne Gap residence. Allen Mullins Jr., 31, of 778 Highway 3400, Payne Gap, and Heather Hall, 28, of Tennessee, were charged on August 19 with first-degree possession of controlled substances.

Judge sentences Misty Slaven
      A 34-year-old Letcher County woman who recently said in a sworn video statement that she witnessed the murder of her 69- year-old landlord but had no part in his death was sentenced to prison this week for her role in the slaying.

Poverty increases in Appalachia
      CHARLESTON, W.Va. The share of Appalachians living in poverty last year increased by 114,000 to 13.3 million, according to U.S. Census Bureau figures released Tuesday. But there was good news in the numbers. Median incomes were up in all the 13 states that make up Appalachia, where the median income ranged from $36,338 in Mississippi to $68,080 in Maryland.

ATV ride planned
      An ATV ride to support the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) will be held Sept. 13 at the Knott County ATV & Motorcycle Rider Training Center. Registration begins at 11 a.m. and the ride starts at 1 p.m.
