Rider facing charges
      Kentucky State Police said charges are pending against a Whitesburg man who crashed his all-terrain vehicle into a trooper's car at Neon last week. Police said Tommy Newman was transported by helicopter to Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, Tenn., after the incident on Sept. 5 and is recovering from his injuries.

Children's dentists honored by national dentistry group
      Two children's dentists with Letcher County ties have been honored by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD). Dr. Jenny Ison Stigers was named Pediatric Dentist of the Year at the AAPD's 61st annual session in Washington, D.C.

Cash for trash
      The Letcher County Recycling Center will pay $7 for old appliances such as refrigerators, stoves, washers, dryers, and water heaters. Appliances may be taken to the recycling center on Hwy. 931 S. between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., October 22, 23, and 24. Appliances will also be collected from homes and dumpsites.

Jenkins council halts action on garbage rate change
      The Jenkins City Council has delayed action on a controversial proposal to adjust garbage rates for local businesses. The council also indicated it won't act on the new rates recommended by city's utilities commission until after the 2007 audit identifies the exact amount of money the sanitation department is losing.

3 to appear this week in bid-rigging case
      FRANKFORT An arraignment is set for Friday in U.S. District Court in Lexington for three men — including former Transportation Secretary Bill Nighbert and contractor Leonard Lawson — who were indicted after a yearlong FBI investigation into alleged bid-rigging for highway construction projects.

Golf scramble set for September 21
      The Jenkins Fire Department will host a golf scramble at Raven Rock Golf Course on Sunday, Sept. 21, at 1:30 p.m. Entry for the four-men teams is $150 if registered by September 15 and $200 if registered after September 16. The scramble will benefit the fire department.

Three Letcher schools meet testing goals
      Three elementary schools in Letcher County met Commonwealth Accountability Testing System (CATS) goals and the rest are progressing, according to data released today (Wednesday) by the Kentucky Department of Education (KDE). Letcher County is described by KDE as an exemplary growth district because all schools in the district have either reached goals or are progressing.

An explanation of CATS testing
      Last spring Kentucky students in grades three through 12 were tested in different subjects depending on their grade level. The seven subject areas are reading, mathematics, science, social studies, arts and humanities, practical living/vocational studies and writing.

Jenkins scores improve
      The Jenkins Independent School District did not meet its Commonwealth Accountability Testing System (CATS) goal as a district but the elementary and middle school indexes are higher than last year's scores, according to data released today (Wednesday) by the Kentucky Department of Education.

ACT scores here below state mark
      The ACT test results are in and Letcher County students scored below the Kentucky average for public schools. Students at Letcher County Central High School had an average, or composite, score of 17.1 compared with a statewide average of 18.3. Letcher County ranks No. 167 of 232 high schools.

New chief takes seat
      FRANKFORT New Kentucky Supreme Court Justice Daniel J. Venters has officially taken his seat on the bench. Venters was ceremonially sworn in Monday at a public ceremony that attracted state constitutional officers, Congressman Hal Rogers and Gov. Steve Beshear. The pageantry was for show, because Venters took his oath of office last month.
