Paul and Sondra Rose of Neon, announce the forthcoming marriage of their daughter, Pauletta Louise, to Benjamin Steven Profitt. The bridegroom-elect is the son of Ollie Profitt of McRoberts and the late Dennis Profitt. The wedding will be held at the First Church of God in Neon at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 13. More ... My great-niece, Emmaleigh Adams, fell at school and broke her leg. She had to spend a night in Hazard Hospital. She had to be put to sleep the next day and they set her leg and put a cast on her. The cast goes from her toes all the way to the top of her leg so she can only get around in a wheelchair. This is her first year of school; she is in kindergarten. More ... Pine Mountain Settlement School will offer workshops in dry stone construction, digital photography, and hickory bottom chair weaving during a fall arts weekend Oct. 10-12. Master stonemason Richard Tufnell, who lives in France, will lead the dry stone construction class. He is the co-founder of Dry Stone Conservancy Inc. More ... An open house will be held at Letcher County Central High School on Monday, Sept. 15, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Teachers will be on hand to talk with parents and students' progress reports will be available. Caudill, 89, formerly of Vero Beach, Fla., died July 30 at home in Lake City, Fla., where he had lived since 1983. Born at Eolia, he was married to the late Bertha Caudill. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Loreen. More ... It looks a lot like fall. It will not be too long until cool weather. Now it is up around 90 degrees every day and that is hot. Makes one hunt for a cool spot. We are so thankful to have a heat pump, but now the cool air is used. More ... First, let me say it is a beautiful time to be in Letcher County, Kentucky. The days are getting shorter and the weather is cooling down. Sometimes the nights are downright chilly. The goldenrod and the yellow black-eyed Susan flowers are decorating the fields and roadways, and the big, tall, purple-topped weed that I won't let Ray mow because I think it's so pretty. More ... Lance Corporal David Ian Barnett is stationed at Camp Lejeune, N.C. He was assigned to Combat Logistics Battalion 24 after completing school at Fort Leonardwood, Mo. The battalion is attached to the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit currently deployed to Afghanistan. Barnett is a Whitesburg High School graduate and is the son of David and Regina Barnett of Lynn Haven, Fla. More ... There has been so much sadness since my last column due to the deaths of some of our good neighbors and friends. Lowell Caudill of Doty Creek, just couldn't get over his health problems and died on August 26 at Pikeville Medical Center. His family stayed by his bedside throughout his sickness. More ... The Slone-Hall reunion was held at the Colson Center. The children had the best time. It's the perfect place for running, swinging and playing basketball. The grownups enjoyed the visiting. More ... The Church of God of Prophecy at Burdine will host a Kids Fest for children ages 4 to 12 from 1 to 4 p.m., September 13, at the Burdine Elementary School playground. It seems that we are having an excessive of amount of extremely hot weather these past few days. I worry that my old car will break down when I have my little sidekick, Bennie Wiederhold, with me. Little Bennie is giving me a workout, keeping up with him. More ... Megan Hope Collins is turning 13 years old today (Wednesday). Her sister, Destiney Paige Collins, celebrated her 11th birthday August 31. They are pictured with their little sister, Skylar Lee Collins, 8, and Abigail Trost, who turned two years old August 2. Megan and Destiney are the daughters of Sheila Collins of Camp Branch and Anthony Collins of Little Colly. More ... Jake McQuade Hall was born June 2 to Christy Meade Hall and Jason Hall of Crestwood. He is the grandson of Sharon and Rondall Meade of Roxana and Sue and Doyle Hall of Floyd County. His great-grandmother is Christine Richardson of Whitesburg. More ... The Premium Baptist Church 20th anniversary Homecoming will be held Sept. 20 and 21. On Sept. 20, the event will include free food, inflatables for children, and gospel music beginning at 4 p.m., and an indoor concert by Tools of the Carpenter at 7 p.m. On Sept. 21, worship services with speaker Dr. Bill Mackey will begin at 11 a.m., followed by a fellowship meal. The leaves are beginning to fall. My yard was covered this morning. We've been getting some much needed rain. Some places are getting way too much. We are having nice weather as our summer is coming to a close. The seasons go by fast and especially as you get older, it seems. Everything is still pretty and green. More ... It was a sad week for me. I learned that a precious friend and relative had taken her final journey. Geneva (Lucas) Profitt was married to my first cousin, the late Donald Profitt, but to me she was more than a cousin-in-law, she was my cousin and a dear friend, whom I dearly loved. More ... 'Meeting Resistance', the acclaimed documentary film by Steve Connors and Molly Bingham, will be shown at 7 p.m., Monday, Sept. 29, in the Appalshop Theater in Whitesburg. An organization meeting of all standing committees of the Letcher County Central High School Based Decision-Making Council will be held on Thursday, Sept. 18, at the school.
