Scrip collectors to meet
      On Friday, October 3, collectors of coal mine scrip with gather in Cumberland Gap, Tenn., for the fall meeting of the National Scrip Collectors Association (NSCA) at Cumberland Gap Inn, the Cumberland Gap Convention Center, and Webb's Country Kitchen.

      West Virginia's timber operators are feeling the pinch of the nation's slumping housing industry. State Forester Randy Dye says not only is business bad, but a booming energy sector is drawing workers away from timbering and into the coal, natural gas and oil fields.

Whitco residents hope to join city
      A group of Whitco area residents who were not included in earlier annexation plans now want to be added to the city rolls as soon as possible. Former Whitesburg Mayor Jack Howard led the group's appearance before the Whitesburg City Council, saying they would like to have access to police and fire protection and other city services.

A REAL HORNET'S NEST
      Although the Hemphill Grade School closed several years ago it remains home to the hornets, as the nest attached the bottom right side of the sign indicates. The building, located near Fleming-Neon, is now home to the Hemphill Community Center.

Judge denies motion for shock probation
      Letcher Circuit Judge Sam Wright this week overruled a motion seeking shock probation for a 24-year-old woman who pleaded guilty almost two years ago to helping her late boyfriend carry out a plan to rob and murder his grandmother.

Drought continues
      With no significant rain in the forecast, drought conditions are expected to continue in Letcher County next week. "It will get drier for the next seven days," said Tony Edwards, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Jackson.

Judge blocks early releases
      FRANKFORT A southern Kentucky judge this week blocked the state's plan to release some inmates and parolees early from being applied in three counties. Pulaski County Circuit Judge David A. Tapp's temporary injunction applies only to inmates who were convicted in his threecounty jurisdiction of Lincoln, Pulaski and Rockcastle counties.

Information sought about WW II veterans for Jenkins monument
      Mary Ann Mullins of Jenkins, has collected more than 500 names of men and women from the Jenkins, Burdine and Dunham communities who served in World War II. "Every time we have an article in the newspaper or radio or television I get more names to put on the monument. That war nearly wiped out our community.
