Judge gives McClain 20 years
      A 35-year-old Ovenfork woman was sentenced this week to 20 years in prison for helping her ex-boyfriend murder a 40- year-old Partridge woman in March 2005.

Cougars in our region?
      According to the Eastern Cougar Foundation, an eight-pound spotted female cougar kitten was killed in eastern Kentucky in June 1997 when a man driving a pickup truck hit it on Highway 850 in western Floyd County.

Jenkins delays action on garbage proposal
      Jenkins Mayor D. Charles Dixon said he hopes the city will be able to take action on a controversial proposal to adjust garbage rates for local businesses at its regular monthly meeting on October 6. The Jenkins City Council called a special meeting to discuss the issue last week, but took no action.

Center gets Folk Heritage Award
      Cowan Community Center is a recipient of the 2007-2008 Governor's Folk Heritage Award for its role in promoting and conserving Kentucky's traditional arts. The center is best known for its Cowan Creek Mountain Music School and the Passing the Pick & Bow After-School Program.

Two teachers are honored
      Two Letcher County teachers are receiving 2009 Ashland Inc. Teacher Achievement Awards (TAA). Stacy Isaac, a teacher at Martha Jane Potter Elementary School, and Regina Donour, who teaches science at Letcher County Central High School, will now compete with 22 other teachers from throughout the state for the 2009 Kentucky Teacher of the Year award.

Sam Adams learns wetland restoration
      Sam Adams of Isom, has completed the Eastern Wetlands Restoration Institute, a 59-hour continuing education course teaching the restoration of wetlands for wildlife, wastewater treatment and flood control. Adams is an OSM/VISTA serving with the Head of Three Rivers project in Letcher County.

Scholarship offered
      The Letcher County Kentucky Farm Bureau is offering a $500 scholarship to a non-traditional student over 25 years of age with a grade point average of at least 2.5. The recipient must be a Letcher County Farm Bureau member and must be an oncampus, full-time student.

Jenkins board hikes tax, talks about low test scores
      The Jenkins Independent Board of Education voted to raise taxes on real property to the compensating rate of 68.9 cents per $100 of real property at its September meeting. The board voted to keep the current rate of 69 cents for the vehicle assessment.

Escapee in high-speed chase gets 40 years from jury here
      A Letcher Circuit Court jury has recommended that a 57-yearold Shelby Gap man be sentenced to 40 years in prison for endangering the lives of two Letcher County police officers while he was escaping from Virginia police last September.

Jenkins gets grant
      The Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) has awarded $160,000 to the city of Jenkins for the second phase of a project to upgrade and reconfigure portions of the city's sewer system, according to Congressman Harold "Hal" Rogers (KY-05).

Dawahares will lead parade

Beshear seeks to outlaw online gambling in Kentucky
      FRANKFORT Kentucky's pro-gambling governor is looking to make sure all bets are off for more than 140 online gambling Web sites that operate in the state known for the world's biggest horse race. Gov. Steve Beshear said his administration has asked a Franklin County Circuit Court judge to give the state control of 141 gambling Web site domain names.

'Dozer mishap fatal to miner
      HAZARD, Ky. A bulldozer operator has been killed in an accident at an International Coal Group coal mine in Perry County. Office of Mine Safety and Licensing spokesman Jim Carroll said 55-year-old Harold Lee Graham of Campton was pushing debris over a 180-foot earthen wall about 1:15 a.m. Sept. 19 when the accident occurred.
