Lady Cougars voted second in region
      Oh, the difference a year makes. Last March, the Letcher County Central Lady Cougars, depleted both by graduation losses and defections, stumbled home with a 9-18 record after losing to Jenkins in the opening round of the 53rd District tournament in Hindman.

      Last weekend was long and terribly disappointing for University of Kentucky sports fans. You can say I'm not supposed to have a biased opinion as a member of the media, but I'm a fan too. Whether my colleagues want to admit it or not, we get enjoyment and disappointment from games just like the fans do.

Cougars await Mercer Co.
      The play-off road promises to be a little tougher for Letcher County Central this week. The Cougars defeated Pulaski Southwestern, 34-6, in their opening round game at Ermine last Friday and are now preparing to meet a team that may be their toughest foe yet — Mercer County.

Girls, boys will play Saturday
      The Letcher County Central Lady Cougars will host the third annual Lady Cougar Panorama in the LCCHS Gym on Saturday, Beginning at noon, LCC will host the Jenkins, Knott Central, Leslie County, Harlan County, and Betsy Layne girls' basketball teams. The Letcher County Central Cougars boys' team will scrimmage Appalachia at 6 p.m.

More water brings more opportunity to anglers
      If you have been by Carr Creek Lake in the past few weeks you might have noticed that the water level is quite a bit higher than it normally is at this time of year. And it has been at this level for a while. My understanding for this is that the lake is going to be used as the water source for a new water plant sometime next year.

      Jimmie Johnson won his third consecutive Sprint Cup title on Sunday, tying him with Cale Yarborough as the only drivers in the history of the sport to be able to string together three consecutive titles. The magnitude of such an accomplishment is made even greater when you look back at some of the great champions, including Dale Earnhardt Sr.
