Walking, bike trail being used as road, board told
      The Letcher County Board of Education was told at its November meeting this week that a plan is in place to keep vehicles off a newly paved walking and biking path near West Whitesburg Elementary School.

Jenkins Christmas Parade set
      The annual Jenkins Christmas Parade is scheduled for Saturday, December 6, beginning at 6 p.m. Participants should be getting in the line-up no later than 5:30 p.m. After the parade Santa Claus will be in the fire department to give treats and for photographs.

Trash pick-up rescheduled
      County garbage pick-up has been changed because of the Thanksgiving holiday. Residents whose trash is usually picked up on Thursday will be serviced today (Wednesday). The Friday pick-up had been changed to Monday.

Lawyers want case moved
      FRANKFORT Lawyers for a former state official, a road contractor and an employee of the contractor are asking that their bid-rigging case be moved out of Frankfort. Lawyers for the three men said in court filings Tuesday that there's been too much negative publicity in the case.

Child shot
      MANCHESTER, Ky. Kentucky State Police say a 5-year-old has been shot in the head accidentally by her 16-yearold brother, who was playing with a gun. Trooper Don Trosper said the child was in critical condition Tuesday at the University of Kentucky Medical Center.

Beshear wants ideas about 4 percent cuts
      FRANKFORT Gov. Steve Beshear's administration is asking Kentucky's public universities and government agencies to suggest ways they could cut 4 percent of their budgets. Beshear spokesman Jay Blanton says the governor is forming a plan to deal with the state's looming budget shortfall and has asked for different scenarios for implementing cuts.

Man held on drug charges
      A Premium man was arrested Monday evening after police said they found prescription narcotics, marijuana, cash and a stolen gun at his home. Raymond E. Smith Sr., 57, of 3380 Highway 160, was arrested November 24 and charged with possession of marijuana, receiving stolen property, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
