Thornton man among 11 killed in holiday accidents
      A Thornton man was one of at least 11 people who were killed in traffic crashes in Kentucky during the Christmas holiday period. Deputy Letcher County Coroner Wallace Bolling Jr. said Jimmy P. Mullins, 49, of 5508 Thornton Road, died in a onevehicle accident at Thornton on Christmas Eve. Bowling said Mullins was driving on KY 1862, near the WXKQ radio studios, at 4:28 a.m.

Wreck fatal to Letcher native
      Funeral services were held at Ermine last week for a former Letcher County woman who was killed while on her way to attend church services in Tennessee on December 21. Lois Marie Holbrook, 72, of Rutledge, Tenn., formerly of Payne Gap, died at the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville after she was injured in a two-vehicle accident.

      A Cram Creek woman has been charged with illegally selling one drug that gets users high and another that helps recovering addicts avoid the pains of withdrawal.

Rape charges filed
      An 18-year-old Neon man was arrested and charged with second-degree rape this week after an investigation by the Cabinet for Health and Family Services and the Letcher County Sheriff's Department. William Douglas Slone, of 2014 Highway 805, Neon, was arrested Dec. 29 and taken to the Letcher County Jail. Bond was set at $20,000 cash.

Nine players from Jenkins are all-district
      Nine football players at Jenkins High School have been named to the Class A District 7 all-district football team by the district coaches. Matt Langdeau has been named the best defensive lineman. Also named to the all-district football team from Jenkins High are receiver Matthew Johnson, defensive linemen Nick Fleming and David Walker, and defensive back Matt Gross.

Oil-gas employees charged in central Kentucky scheme
      LEXINGTON Six officials from two related oil and gas companies have been charged in Kentucky with defrauding investors of more than $3 million. The six were arraigned Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Lexington, and all pleaded not guilty.

Firm agrees to pay $276,000
      FRANKFORT A coal company has agreed to pay more than $276,000 in pastdue penalties for federal mine safety violations at five underground locations. U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration chief Richard Stickler said Liggett Mining had failed to pay fines on at least 300 citations dating back to March 2007 at five mines in eastern Kentucky.

Beshear offers 'pension plan'
      FRANKFORT Gov. Steve Beshear called for changes to the state pension system this week, which he said are aimed at easing the financial burden on local governments across Kentucky facing mounting economic pressures. Beshear, a Democrat, proposed a plan Tuesday that could save local governments a combined $37 million on pensions in the fiscal year starting July 1.

Feds approve use of belt-air, shelters in deep mines here
      CHARLESTON, W.Va. The nation's nearly 600 underground coal mines will be allowed to use conveyer-belt tunnels as ventilation shafts and be required to install airtight shelters for trapped workers under new federal regulations announced this week.

Luallen says she'll decide on Bunning challenge by spring
      FRANKFORT Crit Luallen, the state auditor whose financial reviews have stung some local-level politicians, says she will decide before spring whether to challenge U.S. Sen. Jim Bunning in 2010. "I am getting a lot of encouragement to consider the Senate race," Luallen told The Associated Press in an interview last week. "I'm certainly not ruling anything out.

Feds investigating death of a foreman at WVa mine
      MOUNDSVILLE, W.Va. Federal authorities are investigating the death of a foreman at a Consol Energy Inc. coal preparation plant in West Virginia, the Canonsburg, Pa.-based company said Tuesday. Company employees found the body of Mark McIntyre, 58, between 2 a.m. and 3 a.m. about 1,000 yards from Consol's McElroy Mine prep plant, spokesman Tom Hoffman said.

Region bucks smoking bans
      SOMERSET, Ky. While bans on smoking in public places have won support in Letcher County and many other parts of Kentucky during the last four years, the trend has not extended into the traditional tobacco-growing region of southern Kentucky.
