Dad kills boy, 14, in hunting incident
The Associated Press

LA GRANGE, Ky.

Central Kentucky police say a man who may have mistaken his son for a turkey shot and killed the 14-year-old while they were hunting.

Oldham County Police Department spokesman Matt Cornell says police believe the shooting Sunday was nothing but a tragic accident while the father and son were turkey hunting. No charges have been filed.

Cornell says the boy, Steven David Schmidthuber, was pronounced dead at the scene. He told The Courier-Journal of Louisville that the father, David Schmidthuber, may have mistaken his son's movements and appearance for a turkey and fired his shotgun.

Oldham County police spokesman Matt Cornell told the Courier-Journal that the father and son went out turkey hunting in the Rebel Ridge Road area early Sunday. They had been in the woods for about 30 minutes and were hunting on separate ridges when the shooting happened around 7 a.m.
