State would lose jobs and money

Kentucky would lose over $123 million dollars in federal highway funds and 4,298 highway related jobs if Congress approves a plan to lift taxes on gasoline from Memorial Day through Labor Day, a trade group opposing the plan says.

Presidential candidates John McCain, a Republican, and Hillary Clinton, a Democrat, are in favor of the gas tax holiday. The idea is being opposed by Barack Obama, a Democrat.

The American Road and Transportation Builders Association says that in addition to costing Kentucky thousands of jobs and millions in federal highway funds, the savings would go directly to the oil companies and not to consumers.
