YMCA in London closes

LONDON, Ky.

Officials of the YMCA in London have shut down most programs, saying they can't afford to continue them.

Director Don Burgin said the London-Laurel County "Y'' struggled with $6,000 monthly utility bills and its budget was further stretched by an increase in the minimum wage.

Burgin said the YMCA's summer camp and preschool activities will remain open.

The facility opened in 1999 and features a heated indoor swimming pool, exercise equipment, a gym, and aerobics room and a BMX track, according to the YMCA's Web site.
