      Nolan White, 67, of Kona, died December 29 at Whitesburg Appalachian Regional Hospital. Born at Kona, he was a son of the late Charlie and Maggie Holbrook White, the father of the late Jay White. He was a brother of the late Ralph White and Wanda White.

      Funeral services for David Darrell Campbell, 38, were held January 4 at the Ball Branch Old Regular Baptist Church. Burial was in the Campbell Cemetery at Mousie. A son of Matta Marie Slone of Indiana and the late Mitchell Lee Campbell, he died January 1 at his home at Mousie.

      Hagel Campbell, 91, of Letcher, died January 1 at the East Kentucky Veterans Center in Hazard. A son of the late Mannon and Meldie Whitaker Campbell, he was a brother of the late Zola Watts. He was a member of the Cedar Grove Old Regular Baptist Church, and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

      Maewood "Granny" Wilder, 76, of Bean Station, Tenn., died January 2. A daughter of the late Bill and Susie Sparks, she was married to the late Berlin Wilder and was the mother of the late Danny Wilder. She was a sister of the late Deanorl Sparks, Juanita Day, William Sparks and Ronnie Sparks, and the grandmother of the late Kristopher Wilder.

      Funeral services for Lawrence "L.P." Sumpter Jr., 73, were held January 2 at Letcher Funeral Home. Burial was in the Day Cemetery at Kingscreek. A son of the late Lawrence and Vera Fields Sumpter, he died December 30 at his home after a long illness. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Lena Day Sumpter.

      Former Marlowe resident James E. "Jim" Adams died December 19 in Louisville. He was 70 years old. Born in Whitesburg, he was a son of the late Bonnie and P.W. Adams. His survivors include a sister, Irene Adams Amburgey of Wellington.

      Betty Hall Campbell, 85, died December 20 at her home in Riley Township, Mich. Born in Whitesburg, she was a daughter of the late Nathan and Ama Adams Hall. She was a sister of the late Sadie Wright, Johnny Hall, Forrester Hall, Joe Hall, and Ernest Hall.

Born in Leslie County, he was the son of the late Rev. Joseph T. and Rebecca Wooton Browning and the father of the late Patty Faye Browning. He died December 30 at the Veterans Center in Hazard.

Ivan Back always talked with a smile
      On Oct. 30, my uncle, Ivan Back, died. He was 83 years old. One of 13 children, he lived the first half of his life in Millstone. In 1941 he volunteered for the Marines and saw vicious combat in Saipan, Tinnian, and Guatalcanal. He was seriously wounded and contracted dengue fever and malaria, which would haunt him for years.
