Obama school speech watched by nearly all here
      Most students in the Letcher County school system watched Tuesday as President Barack Obama delivered a speech urging them to study hard and stay in school. Letcher County Schools Supt. Anna Craft said Obama's speech to students was shown in several classrooms across the district on Tuesday with no problems.

Ex-player charged in scam
      LEXINGTON Lexington police say a former University of Kentucky basketball player has been charged in connection to a scam to sell fake season tickets. According to a police statement, Derrick G. Miller is charged with one felony count of theft by deception for allegedly selling season tickets that weren't available for him to sell.

State wants rebate plan in place by December
      LOUISVILLE Kentucky officials are hoping for federal aproval that will allow launching an appliance rebate program in time for the holiday shopping season. The state is to receive $4 million out of $300 million set aside nationally for energy-efficient energy appliance rebates. The rebates will range from $20 to $400.

Dog show set for Sept. 20
      The Mountain Heritage Dog Show will be held Sunday, Sept. 20, at Riverside City Park in Whitesburg. Registration will begin at 1:30 p.m. and the show will start at 2 p.m. Categories include Macho Dog, Pretty Princess, Look-Alike, Best Dressed, Best Trick, and Marvelous Mutt. The firstplace winners in each category will compete in Best in Show.

CAST IRON CHEF
      Letcher County native Jared Richardson, executive chef of Cleveland's Restaurant in Versailles, won the title of Cast Iron Chef at the Kentucky State Fair on August 28 for the fourth straight year. He competed this year against Colin Simmons, chef at Lynn's Paradise Cafe in Louisville. Chefs are given 30 minutes to create a dish using two secret ingredients.

Mountain Heritage Woodcraft contest categories are set
      Woodcraft and Christmas craft/holiday decorations contests will be part of the Letcher County Mountain Heritage Festival this year. The contests are sponsored by Letcher County Extension Office. No kits are allowed in the woodcraft contest.

Miners' electrical retraining offered
      Hazard Community and Technical College will offer an annual electrical retraining class free of charge to all underground and surface miners who have a current electrical card.

Meeting set
      The Letcher County Extension District Board will meet at the Extension Office, 478 Extension Drive, Whitesburg, at 5 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 14. All regular board meetings are held on the second Monday of each month.

      The eighth annual charity horse show will be held at 7 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 12, at the Perry County Horse Show Ring in the Perry County Park. The show is presented by Kentucky River Regional Animal Shelter.

Judge agrees with finding that miner was being punished
      An administrative law judge has ordered the immediate reinstatement of a Letcher County coal miner who charged that he was laid off from his job in May because of his role as a miner's safety advocate.
