Cougars whip Bulldogs
      After opening with big wins over South Laurel and Middlesboro, the Letcher Central Cougars traveled to Hazard this past Friday to take on the Bulldogs. Hazard and Coach Mark Dixon made it to the state championship game last season in Class 1A before falling to eventual champion Central.

Girls beat Hazard in volleyball match
      On Sept. 2, the Hazard Lady Bulldogs traveled to Letcher County Central High School for a volleyball match with the Lady Cougars. Letcher Central came away the victor, 2-0 (25-5, 25-7). In the first set, the Lady Cougars was led by senior Victoria Halcomb who scored 17 straight points serving and made several kills against the Lady Bulldogs.

NASCAR teams are in race to sign Indy's Danica Patrick
      CHARLOTTE, N.C. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out Danica Patrick plans to give NASCAR a try. After all, why would she use her summer vacation to tour North Carolina race shops if she had no intention of trying out stock cars? She's twice been to Tony Stewart's place and visited shops owned by Joe Gibbs, Richard Childress, Jack Roush and Michael Waltrip.

Lindley honored
      Kentucky cornerback Trevard Lindley has been named Southeastern Conference defensive player of the week following his performance against Miami (Ohio). Lindley returned an interception 25 yards for a touchdown and added three tackles and three pass breakups in Kentucky's 42-0 victory, the first shutout by the Wildcats in 13 years.
