WEATHERING THE STORM

Quail restoration featured on KET
      Biologists with the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources are joining forces with landowners and members of Quail Unlimited in an effort to restore the state’s bobwhite quail population. “Kentucky Afield” airs a progress report from Webster County on KET this Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 6 and 7.

Poster and essay deadline extended
      The deadline for submitting entries to the Kentucky Department of Agriculture’s poster and essay contest has been extended to Feb. 19 because of school closings during the bad weather. Students in grades kindergarten through 12 are eligible to submit posters and essays. The theme is “Kentucky Proud: Growing a Healthy Kentucky.”

Water, sewer work set for Jenkins
      Good news on two long-awaited water and sewer projects highlighted the February meeting of the Jenkins City Council. Paul Nesbitt of Nesbitt Engineering, which works with the city on water and sewer projects, announced that both the Number Two Sewer Project and the Camden Water Project will have pre-construction meetings on February 16 and both will begin construction shortly thereafter.

Nurse conference set for Feb. 11
      Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College will hold a pre-admission conference for students who wish to enter the registered nurse or licensed practical nurse program at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 11, in Whitesburg at the SKCTC auditorium. Students who wish to apply to either program must attend a preadmission conference.

Kentucky Power’s rate hike can’t occur before July 14, agency says
      The state Public Service Commission has ruled that if Kentucky Power Company wins approval of any portion of a proposed 34.5-percent rate increase, the rate hike would not take effect for five months.

Letcher woman sentenced in fraud case
      A Cromona woman was recently sentenced to serve one year in prison after she pled guilty to Medicaid fraud. Tiff any Bentley, 29, fraudulently billed the Kentucky Medicaid Program in 2006 and 2007 for services provided to children in the First Steps Program, a statewide early-intervention program for infants and toddlers experiencing developmental delays.

Higher taxes on old autos angers unaware residents
      Some Letcher County residents have recently gotten a surprise when they walked into the clerk’s office to pay motor vehicle property taxes. Their bills increased from what they paid last year.

Feds going after late fines
      Federal prosecutors are suing the operators of three inactive eastern Kentucky coal mines for $665,000. The operators of Double A Mining’s No. 4 mine and King Brothers Coal mines No. 1 and No. 2 owe that total in civil penalties for violations of federal mining laws. The mines are in Knott County.

      When Letcher County Sheriff Danny Webb took office nearly eight years ago, he immediately began working to try to get the county included in the Appalachia High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (AHIDTA).

UofL will honor late Dr. Bentley in library
      The University of Louisville is honoring a Letcher County native by placing a book in its library dedicated to the memory of the late Dr. Bobetta Bentley. Dr. Bentley was a graduate of the UofL School of Dentistry. She unexpectedly died November 27 at home after a very short flu-like illness.

      The Letcher County 4-H Teen Club is accepting orders for chocolate-covered strawberries until Wednesday, Feb 10, as a Valentine’s Day fundraiser. The cost is $6 per half dozen, $12 per dozen. Order will be delivered Friday, Feb. 12. For more information, call Jason Brashear, 633-2362.

      The 26th annual Miss Southeast Scholarship Pageant will be held Saturday, Feb. 6, at 6:30 p.m. in the Edsel Godbey Appalachian Center on the Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College Cumberland campus. Participants will be judged in areas of talent, poise, on-state question and evening gown.

Little boy gives Shriners a big donation
      On January 22, Aaron Adams of Sandy Hook presented Shriners Hospital in Lexington with $1322.58. Aaron and his family raised the money with a cupcake bake sale that Aaron wanted to do for the hospital. Prior to making his donation, Aaron and his family were given a tour of the facility in Lexington and Aaron was able to see for what his donation was going and whom it would be helping.
