Speak Your Piece

Call 633-7508 from 9 am Tuesday to 9 am Friday. E-m@il address

In addition to the telephone and the U.S. Mail, The Mountain Eagle accepts comments to Speak Your Piece by electronic mail. Our address is: mtneagle@bellsouth.net

Our great town of Neon, the only place in the U.S. where raw sewage can run out in the middle of the street. And yes I have pictures of the solid waste and filth coming out of the ground. I wonder what type of health hazard this is. We have heard for a number of years that we are working on fixing this problem and guess what? It’s still not fixed. You hear of hepatitis spreading because of drugs, but looking at the streets of Neon that is a bowl of infectious diseases. So come and visit our great town. And for the record the health department has been notified.

.

Since they’re building parks at other places, why don’t they make a nice park for the kids in Sergent? They need a place to play, too, like where the old school was located at one time.

.

This is to the person in the blue Toyota who pulls out without stopping at a stop sign: The sign is there for a reason and I think you need to start obeying it. By the way you are acting — and you are on your way to Walmart right now — you are going to get someone killed. You are a stupid driver and you would think you would know better.

.

People of Letcher County want to know what happened to the money that was taken from them by Kentucky Power Company. If they had been at the ballgame at Pikeville, they would have seen where it went. They donated $300,000 to Pikeville College. I think this is a crying shame when people have to pay high power bills so the company can turn around and donate the money to a man who appointed people to the Public Service Commission. Maybe this was a payback. I think it should be investigated.

.

This is Donna Hubbs and drove five hours to take my 90-year-old mother to eat at a certain restaurant. There were eight of us and they had a cow that had to be 97 years old, because it was so tough you could not eat it. I told the manager, but she was very rude and made us pay $90 for that food that we could not eat. It was the sorriest meal I have ever had in my life. I have tried to get hold of the owner and I cannot get hold of anybody.

.

I know this man who left his wife for a bunch of pillheads. I hope he is happy.

.

Polluters and irresponsible utility companies are killing our health and economy. How many businesses would want to come into this area after learning about our water and electricity struggles? That was a good comment in last week’s paper about the lack of businesses and services in Letcher — an accurate description of a strange and alarming situation. This week I have heard three people say they are moving out of here. One of them said you can’t trust the air you breathe, or the drinking water from any source. Another said there’s a power failure every time a cloud or a gust of wind passes. Another wants away from the lawlessness and unresponsive enforcement. One thing I think almost everyone will agree with — the exploiters and polluters couldn’t care less about our welfare. They would be happy to see us all gone, because we’re just in their way. The thing that puzzles me is why neighboring counties, who have a lot of our problems, still seem to have so much more than we do?

.

Why did the local school system have school on Presidents’ Day and not have school on Martin Luther King Day? If they need to make up the school days, why didn’t they have school on that day?

.

Wish to know name of cemetery on the old school house hill in Mayking. Please respond.

.

The fire department in Whitesburg is awful. It’s taking 15 minutes for them just to get to Wendy’s from the middle of town. Someone should do something.

.

If the noise doesn’t stop at night on Main Street in Jenkins, I am going to call the state police. Now, Mr. Mayor, tell the police to do their job.

.

Letcher County Central High School needs Joe Perkins as head softball coach. He is the assistant coach right now. He and his wife need to be moved up to head coaching.

.

If I catch anybody prying off my truck or that silver Cadillac, they are going to have a behind full of buckshot. You have been warned.

.

I would like to wish my sweet darling a belated happy birthday on Feb. 26. I just want to let you know you are always on my mind and in my heart forever and I love you. Please give me a call whenever you read this. You have been away for a month now and I miss you so. Happy birthday, baby, and just know that you are loved by your true love, Tammy. I love you always, baby.

.

So yeah I am putting a little weight on, but your woman told me she didn’t mind. She said it gave me more hard drive on my computer.

.

How do you know women are gossiping on telephones? Are you one of the people who have scanners going through people’s phone lines? If you are, then you are stupid. You don’t have a life. Take that scanner and cram it where the sun doesn’t shine.

.

This is to the bus driver over on Carcassonne: You need to slow that school bus down. You are going way too fast for these little bitty roads. You are going to get some child hurt. It could be your child, so please slow it down.

.

Is the union dead in the postal service? If it is not, why are they letting FedEx and UPS deliver mail and packages to the post office? I have never seen anything like it in my lifetime.

.

If all of the politicians are wanting to clean up Letcher County and do important things for Letcher County, why don’t the politicians pick up their political signs they have scattered all over the roads and along the city streets? If they would do that, they would begin cleaning up Letcher County by themselves.

.

I was just wondering if the rising cost of gas is due to the fact that the EPA was in here again checking on diesel that was dumped into the water supply. If that is the case, we don’t need to pay for someone else’s mistakes. I think the gas prices need to be stopped from going higher. Something has got to be done. Each citizen needs to call the governor and tell him that they are tired of this.

(The recent surge in gas prices has nothing at all to do with state or local events. The price hikes are worldwide and are the result of fighting between rebels and government-backed forces in the nation of Libya, which is one of the world’s largest oil producers.)

.

With the economy the way it is today, it is a shame the gas prices keep going up. The oil companies cannot blame it on anything but pure greed. I don’t care what they say; everyone knows what is going on. It’s a bunch of junk if they think that people are going to sit down and swallow their excuses. It’s greed.

.

I was watching the news this evening about the drug czar from Washington coming to eastern Kentucky. I don’t blame the Florida governor for not wanting to do anything with his pill mills because his state is taking in a lot of money from people in other states. Smart, huh? I would like to see the money Kentucky has lost in tax money and revenue from pharmacies, doctors, hospitals and also how Medicaid and Medicare costs have gone up since UNITE. It’s unreal. I look for one way for state to get its money back. Taxes have one way to go — up, up, up. Also, Florida has no state tax.

.

I live on Lakeside in Jenkins. When I called the Jenkins Water Plant to see if we were on a boil water notice, the worker on duty said he did not know and would have to call someone and let me know. Why would a plant operator have to ask if we were on a boil water notice? Do you workers not communicate with each other? Come on, Jenkins. You can do better than this.

.

Well, did you gossipers read Speak Your Piece? I guess if you did you have more to gossip about.

.

I’m a citizen of Jenkins and I was at the fiscal court meeting the other night and a Jenkins council member was there. Have you ever watched ‘ The Andy Griffith Show’ and seen the Darlings? That’s what they remind me of, the Darlings standing there spending taxpayers’ money. We had one ex-mayor in Jenkins and I just wonder what his gas bill is, because he is at every fiscal court meeting they have. The fiscal court is just spending our money. Mayberry was a better town and a good town and had good people in it. The Darlings would do a much better job running the fiscal court than what Boss Hogg Jim Ward does down there. This new building Jim Ward is building on our taxpayers’ money is paying $22,000 a month in interest. Jim, thank you for taking care of our money. You are doing a good job, buddy. In four years we will be lucky there is a Letcher County still here.

.

It’s no wonder Jenkins losing so many students to neighboring schools. At Burdine you have five or six students walking around with nothing to do and too much time on their hands. The high school doesn’t even have a principal.

.

In response to the comment from the person wondering why we don’t have much in the way of larger stores or a better selection of restaurants or new car dealerships: Whitesburg used to seem to me to be like going to New York; the same for Jenkins and Neon in the earlier years. We had new car dealerships and a multitude of restaurants, movie theaters and the list goes on. Our forefathers invested and built these little towns. Sooner or later the well runs dry. It is agreed that coal and gas seem to be the influx of revenue in this county. The major mining companies have closed out over the years. When the backbone of the county no longer has anything to support, then the car dealerships, the restaurants and any other aforementioned activities dissipate away from our forefathers who have long since retired. Where you have no major reserves or revenues, you have no major businesses. Also, businesses have tried with dire straits to hang on but can’t. You cried for Walmart, you got it. You cried for a larger supermarket, you got it. That drives off just about any business that ever tried to make it. Quit acting, talking and looking like you still live in 1955.

.

These schoolteachers need to quit their whining and crying. Most of them don’t even work an eighthour shift. They get about a half-hour to an hour planning period. When I was in school there was no such thing as that. They give them lunch. They eat good food right out of the lunchroom. They get most of the summer off. Quit your whining and crying and do your job. Teach our kids something.

(If it’s such an easy gig then maybe you ought to get qualified to teach and apply for classroom duty.)

.

To all the officials, judges and lawyers in Whitesburg: You all had that fellow down there for years and years and now you got him for methamphetamine. There are kids in kindergarten laughing at you all. Who do you all think you are fooling? Give that man about 10 or 15 years. Do you not have any dignity at all? Do you think we are all stupid?

.

I went to the fiscal court meeting the other night and I listened to the people we voted for to represent us. I think we are in trouble again. They let a company have a schoolhouse that taxpayers have paid $2 million for. They leased it to them and have gone into the assisted living business. A county and a city aren’t supposed to be in the business to make money and they are using taxpayers’ money to do it. So Mr. Kincer and Mr. Dixon the ex-mayor in Jenkins, I don’t know what they are thinking. They keep saying they are going to do this and do that. They keep spending our money and they have spent our money for 20 years on that old schoolhouse. They don’t even have two rooms in it fixed. Taxpayers, wake up. We’re in trouble if we don’t get some officials elected.

( Are you saying you’d rather $1.5 million or so be spent on the old high school building only to have it sit empty?)

.

My neighbors are the nosiest people on earth. Every time anyone comes to my house for anything they sit on their porch and try to see what is going on up here. Why don’t you mind your own business, you belligerent bastards?

.

To a man on Buck Creek: Are you ever going to grow up? You are soon going to be 49 years old and you are acting like a child. You think drugs and alcohol will bring you through life, but it won’t.

.

I’m thinking about you and I’m thinking about the racetracks we used to visit.

.

Please get this to the UK official. Get someone else on the team to keep score. They are screwing up so much that I don’t know what is going on and nobody else does either.

.

Everyone says you act like an angel in church, but I don’t know how you could hold your head up after what you have done.

.

Two weeks ago a writer wrote in The Mountain Eagle about how much better strip mining is now than it was years ago. I agree that it has improved, but only a little, and that is mainly due to the government and environmentalists forcing the coal companies to reclaim better. We no longer have slag heaps, but we are destroying whole mountaintops now. Yes, we have elk, but how many people want them next door? They destroy my garden and my family has had three auto accidents because of the deer overpopulation. The rest of the state is happy we have this herd, because they don’t want them. I like to hunt squirrels and geese, but reclaimed land won’t support hardwood trees because the topsoil is buried at the bottom of the valley, blocking the stream and destroying fishing for the rivers below. And the ponds the geese use for their migratory stopover have been drained and bulldozed under.

.

A certain charge nurse is said to be very good at her job in some aspects, but she is the type of person who plays favorites with her patients. In other words, she is said to treat some patients better than others. She at times has been contrary to her patients and contrary to ambulance workers except for the Letcher ambulance workers. I think everyone should be aware of what is going on.

.

The mayor of Whitesburg has said something has to be put on the water system to detect petroleum or any other foreign object being let into the water supply. It has been stated that the water pipes for the Whitesburg system are old. The oldest does not add diesel fuel to the water supply. The people of the water supply system should request legally that their water supply be protected for their safety.

.

When I divorced my husband it gave all the women something to talk about on the telephone.

.

A few years ago my employer did away with the family health plan. My wife got a job and went to work for health insurance reasons. She worked for three years and was unable to keep up with the hour drive both ways to work and had to quit for health reasons. She got doctored up and went to work at another place without health insurance at another place for minimum wage. Yesterday she went to the doctor at a clinic for poor people and her bill was $178 and she made $170 dollars working the week before. People who have health insurance and lose it are left to twist in the wind.

.

Hi there, brother Steve. To Scott: Hope you enjoy this week of Speak Your Piece while you are sitting on your throne. Ha! Ha! Love, from Kentucky.

.

I was visiting friends in the Neon area last week. As I was going to their house on East Potter Road, I noticed a huge garbage pile. The large pile of garbage is directly behind the ELM building. The trash is blowing into the creek and road. My understanding is that a city councilman lives in the area and passes it every day. It has been reported to the City. Why isn’t something being done about this? I also understand our magistrate knows of this, but he elects to do nothing. This would make a good story for William Farley if he would want it.

Energy thoughts: Wintertime with its trials and tribulations leaves us all with financial obligations./The cost of energy has gone out of sight, leaving all to think about their plight./The cost of energy invokes a fight, people who care protest in Frankfort for their rights./ Don’t allow upper echelon people to talk down to you, until you are permitted to express your views./Mineral resources were bought a long time ago, by companies that did not let landowners know their goals./Strip mining, gas line and all forms of mineral processing has taught the public an unbelievable lesson./The PSC can initiate great discussion, but with energy cost it means nothing./’Cap and trade’ has been discussed but this proposes a plan that people can’t trust./The upper echelon workers are on the take, 17 percent is a piece of cake./Did everyone in the chain of command get a pay raise, or will you discuss this on another day?/ To pay our energy bills has put us in status quo, how we will pay our bills we really don’t know./The energy suggestions that PSC will suggest will put homeowners to the test.

.

Dear Mountain Eagle: I would just like to inform the citizens of Letcher County that they have recently brought Jerome Boggs to Luther Luckett Correctional Complex. The good thing is there are enough people here who know what he did. Good night and good luck.

.

To Ross Kegan: I read your letter to the editor. You seem like an intelligent man, so answer some questions for me. Why is it that Cumberland Resources Inc./Massey gives the bosses of the prep plants in Virginia and other areas a truck to drive back and forth to work and pay for the gas or fuel they use, who make a lot more money than the ones who do all the manual labor? I would also like to know why they don’t put their company name and a number on the side of them like other companies do, and make them wear uniforms as long as they are in the company truck. The reason I am asking this is for the past four years, since one of your bosses started working for your company in Virginia and Kentucky, my wife and I have seen him a number of times at Payne Gap Lake parked beside of the road in Virginia, and Black Mountain, and also Little Shepherd Trail. He is a married man and he is on company time in a company truck. That way his wife thinks he’s at work and no one will recognize him. We have also heard that he drives it to doctor appointments in London and Harlan, hauls firewood and gates. He was driving a Chevy, but now he’s driving a Ford, I guess so people would not know who he is. We have pictures of him on Little Shepherd Trail on company time and in a company truck. The main reason I am writing this is, if you were to put the company name and a number on the side of your trucks it would cut out a lot them using it for personal reasons, like driving them to church. He does that now anyway, and the money you save, you could give that to us workers so we can buy gas to get back and forth to work. Please answer these questions if you can.

A few weeks ago two American teenage students were murdered on the border at El Paso, Texas. But they were not your children, so I guess it doesn’t really matter. Then, a few days ago, the two immigration and customs agents went into Mexico and stopped at a checkpoint. Assault weapons were put through the window. One agent was killed and one shot in the arm and leg. But we are expected to overlook the people who broke the law by coming here, many of whom are driving drunk, unlicensed, uninsured, killing and injuring our citizens. This, plus the murders, rapes and robberies. Not to mention all the drugs they bring in. They have basically bankrupted California as well as other states. You had best think this over seriously. Other states are considering the same kind of legislation. Don’t let feelings overcome the facts, especially when you know the facts. The immigration bill that our legislators have drafted is one of the best things that has happened in this state. Thirty percent of our prisoners are illegal aliens who have committed crimes. The people who are against the bill either have a personal interest or they are just going by their feelings. Feelings are not good enough in serious matters. Our legislators are using facts. Fifteen years ago I would have let my feelings guide me, but I learned the facts firsthand. Illegals can go to the emergency room for any little reason, and they can’t be refused. And I know personally that they do this. They give a false address and the hospital puts in on their tax return. They come here and have a baby at a cost of $20,000, and your tax dollars pay for it. Then they get housing, food stamps and free medical care. It’s not safe for any American citizen to be in Mexico. The latest from the tourist town, Acapulco, the drug cartel opened fire on taxi drivers, killing 13. Two weeks ago 12 murders by decapitation.

Please respond to this comment by posting responses in the next Speak Your Piece. What businesses would you like to see in Letcher County? Would you enjoy a community website, other than Topix, which does not have gossip intent? Would you like to have a movie theater here? If so, would you like a drive-in theater? Let me read some feedback from the community and perhaps we can all begin to start blessing our community with interesting businesses and activities. Yes, I’m aware of the new recreation center. That will be awesome. However, I feel that there are various others things that we could do in this area. I believe an affordable crafts store would be an interesting idea. I’m also interested in making children’s books. When you read this, please begin to think up ideas and post them here next week. Let’s pour out our dreams here, share them, and begin to explore what we can do as a community of people. America is not dead, people, unless we stop innovating and stop dreaming and stop being creative and unique. So now, post your ideas and let me read them here next week. In the meantime, pray, seek God, and dream.
