To all you ginseng diggers: The next one of your vehicles I see sitting by the road will have its windshield knocked out when you come back from digging ginseng without permission. Quit stealing people’s ginseng.

This county is treated by law enforcement and the judges like we were an Indian caste system. Those in the top rung can burn churches, burglarize, steal wire, buy stolen metal, and use and sell dope, and you couldn’t get a deputy out for anything. If the anointed ever get to court, they’ll be given a wrist slap and all the assistance and support they can use. Let one of the untouchables sneeze in public, though, and they’ll get the book thrown at them. What a mess.

My angel went to heaven on a bright and sunny day. My angel went to heaven where she could run, jump and play. My angel went to heaven, her pain she left behind. My angel went to heaven where happiness is what she’ll find. My angel went to heaven and it hurt to let her go. My angel went to heaven where she waits for me I know. For my wife Donna, with much love.

It was amazing that so many teachers in the nearly failing Letcher County School System showed up at the Whitesburg City Council meeting to speak out against the occupational tax, yet not a one of them uttered a peep about the already exorbitant and soon-to-be-raised school taxes everyone in the county pays. At least the City of Whitesburg supplies some actual services and this the first time this type of tax proposal has happened. County schools have their hands out every time you turn around.

This is to all decent Neon and Fleming residents: It’s time we get rid of some of these drug dealers in our area. Since our Neon police aren’t going to do anything we need someone to start shutting down some of these drug dealers around here. I think the people need to put their two-cents in too. I think it’s up to us. We have a police force that won’t do anything. We need to do something.

.

I pray every night when I lie down that they will take these alcoholics and these drug heads and put them in jail until they rot.

.

Is it right for a leader to blatantly chew tobacco on school property? Isn’t school property supposed to be tobacco-free?

.

Somebody needs to come to Kingscreek and do something about the drug dealing up in here. It is running wild.

.

Kentucky ought to change its motto from ‘the Bluegrass State’ to ‘the fee grabbing state’ because all of these insurance companies, TV companies and every other company charging and charging and charging. I think it is unfair.

.

I just want to speak my piece. Why does the state set a budget for a sheriff for $800,000 when he only has 20,000 people in this county to police? The sheriff keeps going back to the fiscal court asking for more money, and I don’t understand that. He is supposed to police the county on the budget the state sets. If he can’t police the county on that kind of money, then in my opinion he is pulling the wool over the people of this county. I never hear him say anything about his salary or his expenses. He just always wants to borrow money. He went up to the school board and tried to do the same thing. We don’t need a sheriff that is all the time wanting to bum money to make money.

(The state does not set the budget and provide operating money for the sheriff’s office here or in any of the other 119 counties in Kentucky. Most of the money in a sheriff ’s budget comes from fees and commissions associated with property tax collections. While sheriff ’s budgets are often complemented with money from fiscal courts, that extra money has been drying up in financiallystrapped counties all across Kentucky during the past decade.)

This is for the person complaining about the attorney’s lack of response: This is the most common complaint against attorneys, and it should never happen. The Kentucky Rules of Court are very specific in directing attorneys to respond promptly to their clients. You should report yours to the Kentucky Bar Association at 514 West Main Street, Frankfort, Ky., 40601-1883. You can call them at 502-564-3225.

.

Thank you for your editorial in the September 18 edition of The Mountain Eagle. It was spot on. Senator McConnell continues to pander to voters who react from the gut, rather than the brain. There are no easy answers to our economic crisis. There is blame to be meted out to myriad sources, historically and presently. But, assigning blame to any one person or thing won’t help one iota. No amount of coal will keep Mitch’s lights on. Last one out turn off the lights.

.

Dear Speak Your Piece: The people of Kentucky are getting kicked in the face again. They now say we can grow hemp in this state, but out in Colorado they can grow marijuana and can get by with it. If people want for this state to do better, have more money and live better, if you are on a jury and a marijuana case comes up, turn them out free. That’s what they are doing in Colorado. They cannot get a marijuana conviction in Colorado.

.

I’m calling in reference to the Lucky 7 Speedway: How is it that I have to pay $22 to watch the races when there is a worker who comes up there and helps on the track and his whole family gets in free of charge? Can someone please explain to me how he does that? I would like to get in on that race.

(Sounds as if the worker is bartering his labor in exchange for his family members being admitted to the track free of charge. What’s wrong with that?)

.

I love you, David. Your wife, Donna.

.

I am so sick of reading about Harley Jack Slone getting 10 years for stealing bronze grave markers and Mitchell Wright not having to serve any time for buying the markers from Slone as scrap. I know who is putting this in Speak Your Piece. The boy shouldn’t have been out stealing the stuff in the first place.

.

Could someone please explain lamb fries to me and where can I find some?

(Lamb fries, also known as ‘mountain oysters,’ are actually sheep testicles that are breaded and fried. They have long been popular in many restaurants in central Kentucky, where they are usually served with gravy. Given your question, one can’t help but wonder just who the person was who invented the recipe for lamb fries — and why.)

.

I’m calling about a post in Speak Your Piece about a blonde-haired woman who drives a black car and lives on a hill. I’m blonde headed, drive a black car and live on a hill. Could you please be more specific about where this hill is located?

.

This is to the coal miners out there: I sympathize with you losing your jobs, but don’t you think it’s maybe time to look for another job, even one that pays just minimum wage? I worked for minimum wage for all of my life. I just think it is time for some of you to experience some of that barelypay your-bill money.

.

It’s sad that Richie Farmer let his personal desires get ahead of public accountability, but never fear, being a convicted felon is not all that bad. It could give you a leg up in politics. Before you know it, he could be pardoned and elected mayor of Manchester. That’s how it goes in our part of the world.

.

One of the happiest moments of my life was when I got the opportunity to work with my dad on the L&N Railroad on the old steam engine. I was the brakeman and he was the engineer. It was such a joy to see how happy he was doing the things he loved, which was running the train and waving at the people. Those were some great times.

.

Ronald Reagan was half a step down from Adolf Hitler. He hated the working class. He hated union people who wanted to do better for themselves. I hated him then and I hate him now. He was a drug dealer — him and Manuel Noriega and George H.W. Bush. They brought drugs into this country and sold them so they could support private war. What a piece of trash he was.

If there is a car on your property and a tree is growing through the back of it, it is no longer a work in progress. It is yard art.

.

If you go to http://www.kentuckyhealthfacts.org and check out how much worse the health of Letcher Countians compared to the rest of the state and the nation is, it makes you wonder why our U.S. Senators are dead set against doing anything to rectify the situation. They’re trying to kill the Affordable Health Act and keep 500,000 Kentuckians from getting health care. Meanwhile McConnell votes to give more money to tobacco farmers so they can keep addicting and killing people. What is it with his love of death and destruction?

.

On September 26 I would like to wish my sister Angie a very happy birthday. I love and miss you and the kids so very much. I’m sorry everything had to happen the way it did, but I love you. Happy birthday, and I miss you.

.

If a bar serves someone who is obviously drunk and then they leave, wreck and kill somebody, the bartender can be sued. What happens when someone overdoses? Why can’t we sue the pharmaceutical company or the doctor who prescribed the drugs? It is time to fight back.

.

Enough is enough. He wasn’t God. There was another side. Let it go.

.

I wonder how workers feel when they are struggling to make ends meet and their bosses drive around in exotic sports cars. Not cool, dude.

.

I don’t know what to think now. A man who I thought was a good preacher gets up in church and tells another man he knows he is of God. I know he sells drugs and he eats Valium like its candy. He was living with his wife, then divorced. I don’t know what this world is coming to. These preachers need to get themselves right with the Lord or straighten themselves out. This is ridiculous. I know the man myself and I know he is not a Christian. He is not of God.

.

I don’t know why the school raises taxes every year. If they’d quit going on those big trips they would have money to run the school system. The people who work hard can’t afford all of that on their taxes every year.

.

I have a problem with the lawyers and court system in Letcher County. Some of them are con artists. All they want is money and even the property that you own.

.

The Letcher County Board of Education finally had the courage to step up and at least appear to provide additional funding for resources for our children. Of course, the two longest serving stuck to their agenda and voted against providing the funding. They are never going to put the children first. Terry Cornett and Will Smith, each of you need to pretend you are Rip Van Winkle and go back to sleep.

.

When Mitch ‘The Abominable No Man’ McConnell voted to approve the Clean Air Act he hailed the bill as an achievement. ‘I had to choose between cleaner air and the status quo,’ McConnell told the Lexington Herald Leader. ‘I chose cleaner air.’ Knowing that the Clean Air Act authorizes the EPA to add to the list of substances it regulates, ‘pollutants which present, or may present, through inhalation or other routes of exposure, a threat of adverse human health effects or adverse environmental effects,’ why has McConnell flip flopped on caring about people having clean air to breathe? Is it money, or having a black man in the White House?

.

This is regarding the person or persons who continuously put something in Speak Your Piece about the junkyard up at Hemphill, Kona or what they call a junkyard here at Neon Junction. It sounds to me like you are someone whose vehicle has been repossessed from one of those places. If you have a problem with that place, call and let the good folks know. If not, shut up.

.

What in the world is the City of Whitesburg doing with all of this money they are taking in? They are still wanting to raise taxes on people’s paydays. I’m like the other guy in Speak Your Piece. I also think they need an audit, because back when they first started taxing by liquor by the drink they were bragging on how much money they were taking in. Now every store in Whitesburg is selling beer, whiskey and wine. Where is all the money going? We need an audit.

.

Is there anything any more useless than Letcher County Schools’ website? Since the system is so generally poor in its results, I guess I can see why they make it so nearly impenetrable to anyone seeking information about the school system.

.

Will our County Judge/ Executive or our Mayor do anything to offset the national Republicans’ cutting off of 39 million peoples’ SNAP? Anything? I haven’t heard a peep. Or are they on the Republicans’ side and want to starve out poor kids?

.

Grand Theft Auto? Try Grand Old Party. They let you have ‘real’ guns. Now ‘that,’ son, is grand.

.

Since State Auditor Adam Edelen is going to be in Whitesburg Saturday for the Mountain Heritage Festival parade, he should save himself an extra trip and stop by City Hall to audit the books.

.

Hello. This is Chris Baker. I’m responding to a letter to the editor from Whitesburg City Councilman Thomas Sexton. In this letter, Thomas Sexton attacks people’s character for not supporting the tax hike. Thomas should take a really deep look at himself before he starts attacking other people’s character.

.

After watching the Whitesburg City Council meeting held last Thursday on the government channel, I was deeply saddened by the quality and ignorance of some of the educators in Letcher County. Most of the people who spoke against the occupational tax were teachers in Letcher County Schools, and I can only hope they know more about the subjects they teach than they know about the law or Constitutional principles. I was disgusted by their misuse of the term ‘taxation without representation,’ which was used by much better people than these in the struggle for American independence. They can’t vote in Whitesburg because they don’t live in Whitesburg. That’s state law. And Kentucky state law gives the City of Whitesburg the right to make laws, including imposing taxes, on those who live and work in the city. The Kentucky General Assembly made the law, and there is your representation. Obviously these people are deeply influenced by the equally reprehensible and ignorant logic of the Tea Party. Most of the so-called educators at the meeting had extraordinarily bad manners too. They continually interrupted other speakers and talked among themselves while the city attorney was reading the ordinance. If this is the kind of example they set for the youngsters they teach, the future looks bleak indeed.

.

I’m just wondering why City Hall has not made some kind of record where all of the money goes from the sale of beer and such. And who has been paying for all of the artwork you see on Main Street and on the buildings there at the bridge and on the hill? Is the city paying for all of that? No wonder your money is gone. It’s beautiful, but we could have done without it and got the streets fixed. And who among us thinks it is pretty to see all of the black marks down through the middle of our streets?

.

I’m calling in reference to the new occupational tax that Mayor Craft is trying to get passed. My brother ran against him in the last election and he tried to warn everyone that this was coming if James got back in. Nobody listened to him and James made it back in and my brother was right. I think we should all think about this next time we go to the polls and vote.

.

I just got off the phone with Whitesburg City Hall. I called over there and asked to speak with someone. The meeting was televised saying that everybody was going to have something out of this new tax and it is good for everybody. I was making a suggestion that before they put the festival tent up they would take that sweeper down there and get the rocks, sticks and bricks off the ground. I have seen old people fall. All they would have to do is go through and sweep it a few times. The smart aleck at City Hall said they are not responsible for the city streets that Mountain Heritage Festival Committee is. So I want to thank Mr. Craft and all of his workers over there that are making it so much easier for all of us good people who are paying taxes.

.

When I saw some of those poor teachers who only work nine months a year and get paid for 12 and seem to know so little about the law whining and moaning at the Whitesburg meeting, it made me wonder what kind of hiring system we have in place in Letcher County schools. No wonder our test scores are so low. They know almost nothing about Kentucky law or the Constitution of the United States. They also set a bad example for their students since they are perfectly willing to use the city’s services but don’t want to pay for them.

.

I’ve tried calling the dog warden until I’m blue in the face about all of these stray dogs running loose on Pratt Branch. There are two in heat running everywhere and tearing up everything. If you like your dogs you better put them up, because they won’t be coming home.

.

I would like to ask how a city councilman in Whitesburg could have the nerve to say he is an honest man and then turn around in the same breath and say that they don’t get one dime for serving as a city councilman. They make $50 a meeting. They voted themselves raises. The mayor voted himself a raise. Then when the mayor says he is willing to cut his pay, that brings him back to where he was before he voted for the raise. That is why he did that so he could look good to the people when he said he was going to cut his. It is all a big set-up.

(Members of the Whitesburg City Council donate their pay to charity.)

.

While making a visit to Cowan School the other day, the teachers were permitted to have popcorn during a clown show but the children were not permitted to have popcorn. There was a kindergarten child who cried so hard for that popcorn and they wouldn’t give it to him. Finally, he got what he wanted. I think it is a shame for teachers to eat in front of children when the children are not allowed to have the food. Think about it. You work for that child.

.

Judge Ward, I am a senior citizen who goes to your Blackey Center from time to time. I don’t want to go anymore because your manager doesn’t make me feel welcome. Most of the people I am a friend with have quit going. Only 10 people are usually there. The food is not very good either. I think the woman over all the centers should have to eat lunch there. She needs to get someone to come in and make that center more welcoming. When I am able I will try to go to Kingscreek, but I went there twice in one week and nobody was there. Mr. Ward, you are a good judge, but the Blackey Center needs some readjusting.
