State Rep. Angie Hatton, D-Whitesburg, has been appointed to serve on the Southern Legislative Conference’s (SLC) Energy & Environment Committee, one of the organization’s six standing committees that provide a forum for policymakers to share knowledge in their area of expertise with colleagues from 15 states across the South.

Rep. Hatton recently received the appointment to serve on the SLC committee from House Speaker Jeff Hoover. The first-time legislator from the state’s 94th House District in Letcher and Pike counties said the position will allow her to promote eastern Kentucky’s coal, oil and natural gas resources.

“As a coal miner’s daughter for three generations back on both sides of my family, I believe I have a valuable and unique perspective on the energy industry to share with my colleagues,” said Rep. Hatton. “I look forward to strategizing on policy issues relating to energy development and the environment, comprehensive water planning, and alternative energy development. I also want to advocate on behalf of the hard-working men and women who dedicate their careers to ensuring we ‘keep the lights on,’ not only in our Commonwealth, but throughout the southern region of the United States and beyond.”

By working together within the SLC and participating on its committees, “Southern state legislative leaders are able to speak in a distinctive, unified voice while addressing issues that affect their states and the entire region,” according to the organization’s website. In addition to Kentucky, the SLC includes the states of Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and West Virginia.

Within the Kentucky General Assembly, Rep. Hatton serves on the committees for Agriculture; Judiciary; and Tourism & Outdoor Recreation. Constituents with questions or concerns are encouraged to call the Legislative Message Line toll-free at 1-800- 372-7181 or email angie. hatton@lrc.ky.gov.
