Imagination Library offering free books

NADIA WYATT NADIA WYATT Three-year-old Nadia Wyatt, daughter of Darrell Wyatt of Jenkins, was registered for the Imagination Library Program during the Jenkins Back to School Bash July 27. Rotarians Eileen Sanders and Sherry Wright gave out school supplies for the Jenkins Independent School District and registered children for the Imagination Library Program. The program has been operating in Letcher County since January 2012 and has served over 1200 children. Children registered for the program receive a free book mailed to their home every month until they turn five years old. If registered at birth, a child can build a library of up to 60 books that can be read over and over again. Research on early childhood literacy says that a child needs to hear 1,000 stories before entering kindergarten. This program is a wonderful way to get books in the homes of eligible children in Letcher County to ensure they are prepared for kindergarten.

Children can be registered on line at www.imaginationlibrary.com or by contacting Margaret Hammonds at 606-633-8200 or Barbara Ison at 606-634- 2106. The Imagination Library is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Whitesburg.
