August 19 — The Elkhorn Shrine Club will hold a four-wheeler poker run, rain or shine, at Fishpond Lake in Letcher County. Sign-up is at 11 a.m. and the ride begins at noon. The cost is $10 per poker hand and prizes are $100 for best hand and $50 for second best hand. Hotdogs, chips and soft drinks will be provided at the end of the ride. . August 19 — Appalachian Strings will play at the Country Cabin II in Norton, Va., from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults and $1 for children 2 to 11 years old. For more information, call (276) 679-3541.


August 22 — The Southeast Kentucky Chapter of the National Black Lung Association will meet 2 p.m. at the Letcher County Extension Office in Whitesburg. The meeting is open to the public and everyone is welcome to attend. The speaker is Dr. James Brandon Crum, radiologist, who is also a B-Reader. Respiratory Clinics of Eastern Kentucky staff and local attorneys with experience assisting with federal black lung claims will be present to answer questions and provide information. . August 26 — The Fishpond Paddle Battle, a day of kayak fun and racing, will begin at noon at Fishpond Lake. Events will include a kids’ race, a one-lap race around the lake, and a three-lap race around the lake. Entry fee is $20 for adults and $15 for ages 12-15. Every participant must have his or her own kayak and approved life jacket, and must wear the life jacket properly in order to race. Proceeds from the event will go to support Pine Mountain Search and Rescue, and tickets are available through the Pine Mountain Search and Rescue Facebook group.

. August 31 — A square dance and potluck will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. at Hindman Settlement School in the May Stone Building, 71 Center Street in Hindman. There will be a live dance band and caller. All dances will be taught, no experience necessary. Those attending should bring a covered dish if they can. Suggested donation for the dance is $5/person or $10/family to go toward cultural programs.
