Xanax pills led to stealing spree, woman tells deputy

Police say a Blackey woman was charged with theft after she went on a Xanax-fueled “stealing spree” near her home recently.

Letcher County Sheriff ’s Deputy Alisha Congleton arrested Amy Sexton after Sexton admitted to stealing a gas can, a chainsaw, a lawnmower battery, a battery charger, and a weed trimmer from her neighbors on the night of July 26. She is currently being held in the Letcher County Jail.

According to the sheriff ’s office, Sexton was arrested after Blackey resident Sam Oakes reported the theft from his home of the gas can, chainsaw and lawnmower battery. During her investigation of the thefts, Deputy Congleton learned that neighbors had seen Sexton “prowling through the neighborhood” on the night the items were stolen from the Oakes home on Nixon Street.

Sexton was initially arrested for outstanding warrants after Oakes’s property was found at her residence.

A sheriff ’s department news release says that after Congleton took Sexton into custody, “Amy further stated she had also stolen a battery charger and Weed Eater from other neighbors. All property was recovered and returned to owners. Amy further stated she was on Xanax and went on a stealing spree (July 24).”

Sexton is charged with theft by unlawful taking.
