August 26 — The Fishpond Paddle Battle, a day of kayak fun and racing, will begin at noon at Fishpond Lake. Events will include a kids’ race, a one-lap race around the lake, and a three-lap race around the lake. Entry fee is $20 for adults and $15 for ages 12-15. Every participant must have his or her own kayak and approved life jacket, and must wear the life jacket properly in order to race. Proceeds from the event will go to support Pine Mountain Search and Rescue, and tickets are available through the Pine Mountain Search and Rescue Facebook group.

August 26 — The Letcher County Cycling Club will host the third annual Pine Mountain Summit Challenge. The 40-mile rally, which will wind through the scenic roadways of Letcher County, will begin around 9 a.m. and take cyclists along the communities of Sandlick, Little Colley, Premium, Roxana, Kingscreek, and Cowan, all capped with a scenic finish atop Pine Mountain. Last year, the premiere cycling event boasted over 50 riders. This year, the “LC3” hopes to add more adventuring cyclists, continuing to build on a recreational event that brings visitors to this beautiful community while capturing some of the most scenic cycling available to Appalachia. There is also a 16-mile route available, encouraging cyclists of all type and ability. The start will be held on Main Street in Whitesburg. The medal ceremony will be held on top of the mountain, near the entrance to Little Shepherd Trail, as the rally concludes between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

August 26 — Cross Country Bluegrass will play at the Country Cabin II in Norton, Va., from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults and $1 for children 2 to 11 years old. For more information, call (276) 679-3541.

August 28 — Country line dance classes will be held at 6 p.m. for beginners, and 7 p.m. for intermediate. The classes will take place each Monday for six weeks at the Country Cabin II in Norton, Va. For more information, call (276) 679- 3541.

August 31 — A square dance and potluck will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. at Hindman Settlement School in the May Stone Building, 71 Center Street in Hindman. There will be a live dance band and caller. All dances will be taught, no experience necessary. Those attending should bring a covered dish if they can. Suggested donation for the dance is $5/person or $10/family to go toward cultural programs.

August 31 — Clogging classes will be held at 6 p.m. for beginners, and 7 p.m. for intermediate. The classes will take place each Thursday for six weeks at the Country Cabin II in Norton, Va. For more information, call (276) 679- 3541.

September 23 — The Letcher County/ Kentucky Picnic will be held at the Harrison Community Center at 300 George Street, Harrison, Ohio 45030, beginning at 12 p.m. Those attending should bring a covered dish and beverage. For more information, call (513) 526-8512.
