Neon shelter burglarized

The Letcher County Sheriff ’s Department is looking for someone who broke into the homeless shelter at Goose Creek in Neon early Tuesday morning.

Deputy Sheriff Eugene Slone said the person or persons had apparently tried unsuccessfully to pry open the front door with a tire iron. When they were unable to get the door open, they broke out a kitchen window and climbed inside.

The burglar then kicked in a locked bedroom door and stole a Sentry safe with about $10 inside, an HP printer and a Dell laptop computer.

Slone said neighbors heard glass shatter about 1 a.m., heard someone walking around in the apartment, and saw a “skinny, dark haired man” walk past the windows about 4 a.m., but did not call the police. Slone said someone notified the sheriff’s office about 10:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Anyone with information about the burglary is asked to call the Letcher County Sheriff’s Department at 606- 633-2293.
