September 9 — The Carcassonne Square Dance will be from 6 to 9 p.m. at Carcassonne Community Center. Adults -$5, Students 6-18 - $3, and children 5 and under free with paying adult. Playground, concessions and souvenirs available. Music by the Golden West Cowboys (John Haywood, Russel Griswald, and Kevin Howard). September 9 — The Dock Boggs Festival will be held in Norton, Va., at the Country Cabin II and Appalachian Traditions Village. Ticket sales begin at 10:30; music starts at 1 p.m. Performing will be Bluegrass Circle, Right Fork Ramblers, Miss Ellie String Band, Appalachian Strings, Tyler Hughes, Cross Country Bluegrass, Benny Jones Band and Country Cabin Line Dancer. September 10 — Jane Austen’s “Sense and Sensibility” will be performed by the American Shakespeare Center at the University of Virginia at Wise’s Gilliam Center for the Arts at 3 p.m.

September 11 — William Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew” will be performed by the American Shakespeare Center at the University of Virginia at Wise’s Gilliam Center for the Arts at 7:30 p.m.

September 14 — Grammy winner Dave Eggar and the Eggar Ensemble will perform at the University of Virginia at Wise’s Gilliam Center for the Arts at 8 p.m. Seating is limited.

September 20 — The Annual “Old Time Country Dinner”, sponsored by the Letcher County Extension Homemakers, will be held on Whitesburg Day of the Mountain Heritage Festival at the Letcher County Extension Office (478 Extension Drive – off Stone Avenue on the Whitesburg By-Pass). For more information, call Nanette Banks at 633-2362. Cost of the meal is $5 and dinner will be served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The menu is soup beans, kraut and wieners, cornbread, dessert and drink. Carryout is available and some limited delivery around Whitesburg. You are welcome to drop by the Extension Office and “sit a spell” and visit with your neighbor. All funds raised will go to support the free Ovarian Cancer Screening Program at Markey Cancer Center at the University of Kentucky.

September 23 — The Letcher County/ Kentucky Picnic will be held at the Harrison Community Center at 300 George Street, Harrison, Ohio 45030, beginning at 12 p.m. Those attending should bring a covered dish and beverage. For more information, call (513) 526-8512.
