Battle of Leatherwood will be reenacted October 27-29

A reenactment of the Battle of Leatherwood will take place October 27-29. The event will kick off on Friday with an Education Day for schools from several counties. The map shown lists the lectures and demonstrations. Jefferson Davis will speak at 11 a.m. on Saturday and the Ladies Tea will be held at noon. There will be a battle at 2 p.m. and a Grand Ball at Cavalry College at 7 p.m. Sunday events include a church service at 10 a.m., a battle at 2 p.m., and closing ceremonies after the battle.

The events are all free and open to the public. Period Civil War music will be performed throughout the event, at the Ladies Tea, and at the ball. Women attending the Ladies Tea will receive a china cup and saucer as a souvenir. All dances will be called, for those that are inexperienced. Period dress is preferred, but not required. Everyone is welcome.

The reenactment will take place across the creek from the Leatherwood Blackey Health Clinic. Sutlers (merchants selling period items), food booths and other merchants will be on site throughout the weekend. Reenactor registration and event information is available at the Brashearville General Store.

The battle occurred while Confederates were guarding Brashear’s Salt Works. Several buildings show period architecture, and a display of pioneer, mining, logging and Civil War artifacts. There is a hair from Robert E. Lee, and one from Abraham Lincoln, along with a brick from the McLean house where Lee surrendered. Several items are from Libby, Elmira, Andersonville and Lookout Point prisons. There is display of examples of various types of photographs, and lots of bullets and cannon balls.

The Battle of Leatherwood reenactment is located at 526 KY Hwy. 699 at Cornettsville.
