Suspect taken to hospital after police pursuit

Vehicle wrecked after ramming police cars, police said

A man and a woman are in custody after a police chase that left at least two cruisers damaged, and the fugitive vehicle wrecked in a creek at Isom.

The chase began about noon today (Nov. 16) at Smoot Creek when two Letcher County Sheriff’s Department deputies attempted to stop the vehicle, which they believed to be driven by a burglary suspect. Witnesses said the vehicle hit one sheriff’s cruiser, and then took off. Police from Whitesburg Police Department and Kentucky State Police joined in the pursuit, and a state police detective coming from the opposite direction encountered the vehicle on Little Colley.

At least one state police cruiser was rammed during the chase before police were able to force the vehicle off the road and into a creek.

Police pursued the occupants of the car into a culvert, and physically subdued them, a witness said.

The man was transported to Whitesburg Hospital Emergency Room by ambulance for treatment of injuries received in the arrest.
