How’s the new year treating you so far? We have been in a deep freeze for a couple of weeks in the Ohio Valley area with temperatures being below zero.

Instead of complaining, we have a lot to be thankful for as we haven’t gotten what so many states are facing. At the time of this writing we are iced in, as we started with freezing rain and the roads are very treacherous for many counties. I need to take my garbage out and can’t get down my steps. Schools are closed again in lots of places.

This has been the coldest winter we’ve had in a few years.

I wonder if anyone recalls your parents or grandparents talking about Old Christmas, which was observed on Jan. 6? I remember Mom and my grandmothers talking about how the cows would get on their knees at midnight ; they said the cows were praying. Please don’t ask me why as I was too young to ask questions or to understand.

How many have taken their Christmas tree and decorations down? My tree and decorations are up, and I may try to get them put away this week.

I had been sick for a couple of days and of course I hadn’t started my car. When I did go out to start it, it took a couple of extra crankings to get it started as it was like me and didn’t want to move.

I have been lucky as my water lines in the bathroom haven’t frozen since I’ve let the water run just a tad bit. Again, I am thankful I have my own water supply.

Once again I let thoughts travel back in time as I remember living in Roxana. The well was down the hill in our garden.

Mom would have to carry the buckets of water up the hill no matter what the weather. Yes, I said Mom as I really don’t ever remember Dad carrying water, and for that matter, ever packing a bucket of coal either.

I would try to help Mom pack the water, but I was so small I would spill half before I got up the hill to the house.

Southern Ohio

Mom had a big metal barrel that she would catch rainwater in to wash the dishes, and try to catch enough to wash the clothes in. In my imagination I can see Mommy so plain as she hung those clothes on the line. In the wintertime, they would freeze dry.

Once a week we took our baths in the washtub, and through the week we washed off in a washpan of water. Off course we didn’t have to take a bath as we were in the river playing in the water.

We had to wash our feet every night as we went barefoot in the summer.

How many remember getting what was called toe itch as you waded water puddles and it cracked your feet?

Kids nowadays don’t know what it is like to go play outside climbing trees and be adventurous. What am I saying, it is not safe to let your child out of your sight as there are so many perverts in this world.

In these days you can’t trust teachers, men and women, preachers, and sure not doctors, and in some cases even family members. I am so thankful my children are grown, but I worry about my grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

I finally caught up with Les and Pat Wagner. I am so sorry to say Pat has once again been under the weather healthwise. I hope how quick she gets feeling better.

Johnny and Ann Calihan’s daughter Sue Wagner had just gotten back home in South Carolina when she had to fly back to this area to go back to the hospital for another procedure. Please keep this family in your prayers.

There’s happy news to report as Sue is going to be a grandma. Sue’s daughter Ashley and her husband are expecting twins. Ann and Johnny are so excited, and you know Sue and her husband Tom are waiting impatiently. Now you talk about some spoiled babies, just wait until these get here.

Sunday was Old Time Fiddlers meeting. We had to change our date so the crowd was small and just a couple of musicians, but it was still a good time. Our meetings are held on the second Sunday of each month at VFW Post 9160, Lawrenceburg Rd., Harrison, Ohio 45030, from 1 to 4 p.m.

I find myself still looking for Oma Hatton’s column. I miss her very much.

I am leaving you with this thought, if you have to hurt someone by telling lies in order to feel power, you are an extremely weak individual.

Until next time, Rose Ballard, 9110 Lawrenceburg Rd., Harrison, Ohio 45030.
