To whom it may concern: We the members of the Black Lung Association of Southeastern Kentucky would like to do a membership in memory of all the coal miners who have passed away from black lung disease. Our chapter would like to honor all miners who have passed because of this terrible disease. This is a way to say they aren’t forgotten. We can’t do this alone. With your help in getting the names of all those who have died of black lung, hopefully we can do this. We cannot do it alone. If interested call Patty Amburgey at 633- 9449 or William McCool at 633-0383. I am Patty Amburgey and I am secretary of the black lung association. Thank you.

My electric bill was $495 this month, and $121 was for adjustments for fuel, DSM, purchased power, and another $43 for environmental adjustment, and for riders, and taxes, etcetera. How long can the people of Kentucky stand this? How long do we have to stand it? It’s time the people start electing people to the Kentucky Public Service Commission. Maybe then they will consider if they will be reelected before they add all these extras to our bills. I’m on a fixed income. I can’t pay these bills anymore.

.

To all of Letcher County: Before you vote for a candidate for magistrate you should see if their telephone number is listed in the phone book. Only one person running for magistrate in District Three has a listed phone number. When you need them, how do you get hold of them? You don’t.

The defense attorney for Huffman was like a young country bumpkin attorney who had little to work with; so crying foul was all that was left. I for one am particularly thankful for the unbiased, professional coverage by both of our local papers and for the professional efficiency of the judicial system. That said, neither the attorney for the defense, his family or most people with any common sense expected anything but an O. J. verdict if they could be honest. I will say, there was some public concern about any influence his family might have had in affecting the outcome, but that didn’t happen. The young man, Huffman, from a prominent family, with an eyebrow-raising past, had fate finally catch up with him. Justice was blind and justice was served.

Count me among those happy to see Facebook moving away from the national newsfeeds in an effort to get users to stop talking about hate and politics and to start talking about families and dating and the other things Facebook was intended for back when it was invented. Before Facebook came along, I had respect for pretty much every person I knew, or thought I knew. Now I have lost that respect for so many people I once held in high esteem. Facebook has become the perfect example of Mark Twain’s old saying, ‘It is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are a fool than to open it and remove all doubt.’

.

The people of Letcher County would like to know why the inmates in the Letcher County Jail are being allowed to have seizures while they are back in the pods. One boy practically cut his own tongue off back in there and it took 10 hours to get him the proper medication. The people of Letcher County are watching the jail and some changes are going to be made when the election comes up. Is anyone doing the job they are supposed to be doing at that jail?

.

Why should the taxpayers of this county contribute to a community kitchen for MCHC when they have a perfectly workable kitchen at the Letcher County Extension Office that the county’s tax dollars already support? I don’t know what’s going on in this county to make anyone think the county can afford to contribute one dime to a new kitchen when the county is so broke that the citizens are cutting grass at the parks. I hope to see the magistrates cutting the grass in the coming year. They need to work a little for their pay, other than simply attend a meeting here and there.

(MCHC is not asking the Letcher County government for a single penny for the proposed community kitchen that would be located on MCHC property on the former campus of Whitesburg High School. The City of Whitesburg, along with other entities including the Whitesburg Farmers Market, is teaming up with MCHC to equip and operate the kitchen.)

.

Interesting that any American president would bald face lie to 50,000 coal miners about bringing their jobs back, but the issues of 43 million black people don’t count a whit. They are citizens, too.

.

So, Trump has relaxed the safety and environmental protection regulations for offshore drilling rigs and opened up our coastlines — except for Florida, where Mar-a-Lago, his favorite golf course, is located. Next time there is a massive oil spill Trump is going to have a ‘yuge’ problem — how to blame it on Hillary.

.

Interesting. Trump’s tiny thumbs are tweeting support for Iranian protestors while discriminating against them with his travel ban. The only thing I can’t figure out is if this is just infantile or a sign of senility. Or is he a new psychological phenomenon — both simultaneously?

.

Workers’ Comp in the state of Kentucky is the most crooked thing I have ever seen.

.

My German shepherd dog has been missing for four days, but I think I know what happened to her. Thank you.

.

North Korea, you’re getting hungry, huh? North Korea, if you would tear one missile down maybe they would let you have a bushel of wheat or something. You start tearing down and the world will help you, but we’re not going to help you as long as you want to blow somebody up. At least Mr. Trump has him squirming a little. North Korea, you better negotiate. Don’t screw up or we’ll light you up.

.

It’s amazing how some people use the Swap Shop to advertise their businesses for profit. One person in Dry Fork gets on there more than one time a day and he’s in business for profit. Another person who lives in Doty Creek got kicked off the Swap Shop because he was supposedly in business for a profit. How is a person with a disability selling nightcrawlers for one dollar for a dozen considered as being in business for a profit?

.

To all law enforcement: Please be on the lookout for a blue vehicle with a beige top. It’s been seen on Pert Creek looking for pills.

.

To all Letcher County citizens living in District Three, including two local newspaper editors: Please vote for someone different than a former official who is running again for magistrate in District Three even though he isn’t up to holding this elected position. A lot has changed with this man since he was last elected. How can we citizens of Letcher County trust this man to be faithful to us? He has also put down local newspaper editors, saying him drinking alcohol and being a magistrate is no different than the newspaper editors holding their positions and drinking. You all would be amazed hearing him talk about people. I heard it from him myself. I think the editors work too hard to be put down like this. Stay tuned for new updates.

.

If you in the unfortunate situation of blowing out your heat pump and you’re left with no heat as a result, don’t call a certain heating and cooling company from the Whitesburg area. The mess they left and the holes in the walls they left without patching would be nothing except for the fact that I am left to judge that against how long it took them to actually get my heat going. I stopped thinking about the days it took them to get my heat going and started measuring by the weeks I had to use kerosene. I wonder how long this man’s workers would be happy using kerosene at their homes? I am truly saddened more than anything else.

.

To a fellow who lives down below Blackey: I hate that it took you all of these years to finally find out what you married. If you think she’s been a solid wife to you, I’m here to tell you differently. She finally showed her true colors to you.

.

A lot of stuff is being stolen now around KY 15 and KY 7 in the Isom area. Here’s a little advice: Nail it down, lock it down, and shut it down. Get you a couple of dogs and a couple of pistols and a shotgun. You’re going to need them. This man doing the stealing is capable of anything.

.

I bought my 2018 Toyota Camry at a junkyard. It is clean as a pin and runs like a deer. It has a sunroof, a scoop, and front-wheel drive. I have been offered twice what I paid for it, but it is not for sale. The Midnight Phantom is now riding in style in a luxury automobile. Thank you.

.

No school tomorrow. It’s going to rain.

.

This is to Huffman’s lawyer: You did really well. This case may have been capital murder. I heard that on Facebook, Mr. Huffman had said he was going to the mountains to do a killing. If that is so, this could have been premeditated murder. Oh yes, almost all cases like this are tried in the county in which the crime was committed. The appeals court will hold this conviction up, I guarantee you. Huffman will be out in 20 years. Mark my word. I think he’s a potential serial killer. Wait 20 years and see if I’m not right on that, too.

.

Females now have a leg up on males. They have choice. If we ever become equal do they lose choice?

.

To the person who burned the church on Flat Gap, the House of Prayer: I know who you are. I’m back.

.

I was getting ready to watch the national championship football game between two SEC teams and remembered back about five or six years ago when Alabama was getting ready to play Notre Dame. A day or two before that game, Notre Dame put out a message saying it was the ‘golden domers’ against the ‘mobile homers,’ which was an insult to the Alabama team. Payback is double. You can let your mouth write a check that your hindend can’t cash. At halftime of that game the score was 31-0 in favor of Alabama. When they asked the Notre Dame coach at halftime what he could do to turn the game around he said he just hoped Alabama didn’t come out for the second half. Notre Dame hasn’t been heard from since. If you can’t run with the big dogs just stay on the porch.

.

I’ve got two words for you: Roll Tide.

.

I would like to speak my piece on this county of ours: We don’t even have a cop or sheriff or anything after 4 p.m. Did you all know that? Back in the olden days they had a sheriff and deputy who stayed at the courthouse all night long. They have the city cops, but they can’t go out any farther than Walmart. You can’t even get a cop to come out after 4 in the evening. I think that’s a shame. Our sheriff’s department needs to be furnished with enough money so the deputies can get out in the county after 4 p.m. I hope whoever is in charge of the money gets their act together before ’60 Minutes’ or ‘20/20’ shows up here.

. If someone’s hair is gray that doesn’t mean he or she is old.

.

I think everybody in Letcher County who crosses the bridge between Mc- Donald’s and the turnoff to the nursing home needs to sue the state of Kentucky for the damages to our vehicles in the right lane going toward the nursing home. It will knock you out of the road. We need to call our congressman and senators. Where is our state representative, Angie Hatton, when it comes to getting something done about this?

.

I would like to say that I am so proud of my granddaughter, Keria Isaac, for getting a high score on her SAT even though she is only in the 7th grade.

.

I see where Showtime is coming out with ‘Our Cartoon President,’ which will make a mockery out of our president of the United States. That fits right in with those NFL players taking a knee when the national anthem is played at football games. That’s like burning our flag to me. Showtime, I am cancelling with you. You are pathetic when you mock a man who is trying to do all he can to help America. God bless America. Mr. President, thank you. There are some dumb people out there. They are just stupid.

.

If anybody knows where we can get TV cable and electricity from somewhere else, please let us know. We are going down the drain fast.

.

I would like to know what the poor people are going to do in Letcher County. The power bill is up, the water bill is up, the garbage bill is up. You can’t even get something to eat without being accused of drawing too much money. Something must be done to bring these power bills back down, because the poor people can’t even eat. President Trump could do it if our governor, Matt Bevin, doesn’t have sense enough to do it.

.

To Letcher County Judge/Executive Jim Ward: When you laid the county employees off, was that a lifetime layoff? Is there any chance of these guys ever getting their jobs back? Is our county so broke we have to run it with three men? This is crazy. No judge in Letcher County has done what Judge Jim Ward has done and kept so many men and their families in the dark while they are starving to death. Jim, you’re going to get what’s coming to you. You’re going to be voted out.

.

While driving up the driveway to Letcher County Central High School I found yet another large rock in the road. It had fallen from the highwall and was the size of a bowling ball. So let’s not do anything to prevent this from happening again; let’s just wait until a similar rock goes through the windshield of a student or hits a school bus. Then the school board will jump into action; then the school board will be fighting off lawsuits. Let’s not be proactive, Letcher County.

.

Chris Wallace, I’m watching you on Fox News this morning and see that you are really coming down hard on the president for a few words that he said while he was in a meeting. Now what else would you call these countries — the land of opportunity? No, they are cesspools.
