Viola Williams succumbs at 87

Viola Williams, 87, of Jenkins, died January 23 at Letcher Manor Nursing Home in Whitesburg.

Born at Marsha l l’s Branch to the late Emit Hassel Johnson and Bessie Johnson, she was the widow of Arnold Edward Williams.

She was the mother of the late Arnold E. Williams, Jr., and a sister of the late Homer Johnson, Guy Johnson, Arlie B. Johnson, Glaidus Hyatt and Lucille Bentley.

Mrs. Williams had been a teacher at Marshall’s Branch and a nurse aid at Jenkins Hospital, and had worked in coal mining. She attended Peak’s Branch Missionary Alliance Church and Whitesburg First Baptist Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Rita Broome and husband Kenneth of Whitesburg; three sons, Melvin Douglas Williams and wife Della of Banner, Daniel Ray Williams and wife Deborah of Robinson Creek, and Edward Dale Williams and wife Carla of Paintsville; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral services for Mrs. Williams were held January 26 at Polly & Craft Funeral Home in Jenkins. Burial was in Green Acres Cemetery at Ermine.
