LCC girls advance

(Photos by Chris Anderson) The Letcher Central Lady Cougars will meet the Knott County Central Lady Patriots tonight (February 21) in the championship game of the girls’ 53rd District Tournament at Letcher Central.

LCC advanced to the final by defeating June Buchanan on Monday night, 73-51. Knott Central defeated Cordia here in Monday’s opening round, 82-21.

Despite the outcome of tonight’s game, both the Lady Cougars and the Lady Patriots advance to the 14th Region Tournament.

The Lady Cougars closed their final week of the regular season with losses at Pike Central and at Pikeville before beating Jenkins at home February 16 and then June Buchanan.

Estill County High School will host the girls’ 14th Region tourney next week, beginning on Feb. 26. The girls’ Sweet Sixteen State Tournament begins on March 14 at Northern Kentucky University.

The Letcher Central Lady Cougars pulled away from the visiting Jenkins Lady Cavaliers after the opening quarter for the easy 73-51 victory Feb. 17, to snap a ninegame losing streak.

Freshman guard Brooke Bates scored a career-high and gamehigh 27 points to lead the 12-16 Lady Cougars. Camryn Parks finished with 12 points while Brooklyn Collins and Mackenzie Craft wound up with six points each. Kaylee Banks and Courtney Hayes scored five points each. Loren Boggs finished with four points. Jessica Boggs, Camryn Collins, Samantha Crawford and Emma Maggard scored two points each.

The Lady Cougars made 30 of 78 field goal attempts for 39 percent and claimed 48 rebounds.

Kristin Thacker and Tobulayefa Watts scored 19 points each for the 6-24 Lady Cavaliers. Watts led everyone with 19 rebounds. Jerrica Thacker scored 11 points and Lindsay Rose chipped in with four points and 10 rebounds.

The Lady Cavalier made 19 of 59 field goal attempts for 32 percent and claimed 41 rebounds.

The visiting Letcher Central Lady Cougars’ shooting woes contributed to their 73-28 loss at Pike Central.

Brooke Bates led the 11-15 Lady Cougars with eight points. Emma Maggard scored seven points and claimed 11 rebounds. Camryn Parks chipped in with four points and Brooklyn Collins added three. Loren Boggs and Hannah Stidham finished with two points each. Kaylee Banks and Mackenzie Craft scored one point each.
