Help offered vets, families

Veterans and their dependents filing for federal or state veterans benefits may contact a field representative of the Kentucky Department of Veterans Affairs for assistance. Veterans can schedule an appointment at the Eastern Kentucky Veterans Center in Hazard on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. by calling (606) 435-6196 ext. 234 or (877) 856-0004.

The Letcher County AARP Chapter will meet on Thursday, November 20, at 6 p.m. at the Blackey Senior Citizens Center for its Thanksgiving dinner. Students at Arlie Boggs Elementary School are learning about nature, protecting the environment, and how greenhouses work. The Greenhouse Project was completed by students as a collaborative effort between Angela Craft, the special education teacher, and Debra Hall, who teaches second and third grade. Other staff members volunteering their time are Jan Sexton and Lynne Hampton.


Courtney Desiraye Jackson will celebrate her 11th birthday on Nov. 20. She attends West Whitesburg Elementary School and is a member of the academic team. She is also a member of the Cougar Cubs dance team. Her parents are Donald and Daisy Jackson of Kingscreek. She is the granddaughter of Cleo Roark, also of Kingscreek, and the late Burnett Hogg.
