Remembering a fallen comrade-in-arms

Bobby Fisher, right, of Whitesburg, shows the flashes and company beret that Fisher and late Sergeant Omer Price Carson of Wolfe County wore when they were assigned to H Company/75th U.S. Army Rangers and went on long-range reconnaissance patrols to gather intelligence in Southeast Asia. Pictured at left is Allen Booth, a relative of Carson’s who came here to meet […]

The Fleming-Neon City Council learned at its November meeting that water rates will have to be raised by a total of 17 percent in the next two years so the city can qualify for a $143,000 planning and design loan from Kentucky Infrastructure Authority. The loan is for the design of needed upgrades to the city’s water system, which has […]

Dawahare family says it can’t afford Neon work

Fleming-Neon city officials continue to be surprised that the owners of two dilapidated buildings still refuse to tear them down. At issue are old Main Street buildings owned by the Letcher County Library Board and the Dawahare family that got its start in Letcher County. The old library building was part of an exchange for a city-owned lot that is […]

One is from the local fishing and outdoor guide you see at some gas stations and stores. Also, some newspaper sports sections carry reports and you can find several […]

Caudill’s Cougars lost 3-0. McCracken County then lost 3-0 to eventual state runner-up Notre Dame, who fell to Mercy in Sunday’s title game, also held at Valley.

And then there were 4!

One race remains on the 36- race Sprint Cup race schedule that has taken on the feel of a marathon after nine Chase races that has reduced the field of drivers eligible to win the title from 16 to four. Struttin’ Time:

Taylor Lynn Collier bags a buck with bow

I have been told it is never too early to panic. My 2014 modern firearms dear season in Kentucky is about to show me why people taught me that saying. After two days of hunting on my rented farm, I haven’t seen a one deer. Before the season began, seeing a deer was an everyday thing, but now nothing. The […]

Will platoon work?

Space this week is dedicated to Bopper, Hobo and Tom Sawyer- like Patrick McSweeney. Kentucky 121, Georgetown 52. To conclude Georgetown College coach Chris Briggs is impressed with Kentucky after Sunday’s flogging is like believing Mitch McConnell is impressed with being elected kingmaker of Congress. Yes, but. “ How to defend Kentucky?’ Briggs was asked. “You better recruit better first,” […]
