14 charged in new indictments


The Letcher Grand Jury has named 14 Letcher County residents in indictments. They are:

• Kenneth Wayne Sexton, 44, of 84 Stinking Branch Thornton, who is charged with first-degree possession of a controlled substance (first offense, methamphetamine, with firearm enhancement), first-degree possession of a controlled substance (first offense, drug unspecified, with firearm enhancement), second-degree possession of a controlled substance (with firearm enhancement), third-degree possession of a controlled substance (with firearm enhancement), use/ possession of drug paraphernalia (with firearm enhancement), controlled substance (prescription) not in original container (with firearm enhancement), and operating a motor vehicle under influence of drugs (first offense).

Kentucky State Trooper Jarrett Fields testified in the case.

In a second indictment, Sexton is charged with bail jumping for failing to appear in Letcher District Court for a scheduled preliminary hearing.

• Faron Casey Banks, 30, of 243 Tipple Road, Isom, who is accused of first-degree possession of a controlled substance (first offense, methamphetamine), first-degree possession of a controlled substance (first offense, heroin), second-degree possession of a controlled substance, possession of marijuana, use/possession of drug paraphernalia, controlled substance (prescription) not in original container, operating a motor vehicle under influence of drugs (first offense), and failure to wear seatbelt.

• Jennifer Lynn Potter, 35, of 8014 Ky. Hwy. 3147, Deane, who is charged with first-degree possession of a controlled substance (first offense, methamphetamine), second-degree possession of a controlled substance, possession of legend drug, no operator’s license, use/possession of drug paraphernalia, and controlled substance (prescription) not in original container.

Whitesburg Police Officer Jordan Clemons testified in the case.

• Kelvin Eric Sexton, 37, of 422 Ky. Hwy. 1410, Whitesburg, who is charged with first-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance (second offense), third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance (second offense), controlled substance (prescription drug) not in original container, failure to wear seatbelt, operating a motor vehicle on suspended/ revoked operator’s license, operating a motor vehicle under influence of alcohol/drugs (third offense, with aggravating circumstance), and use/possession of drug paraphernalia.

Kentucky State Trooper Brandon Watts testified in the case.

• Chad Allen Smallwood, 40, of 153 Cottage Row, Jenkins, whom the grand jury accused of first-degree possession of controlled substance (methamphetamine), use/possession of drug paraphernalia, and operating a motor vehicle with suspended/revoked license.

Jenkins Police Chief Hunter Holbrook testified in the case.

In a second indictment, Smallwood is charged with first-degree bail jumping for failure to complete an inpatient substance abuse treatment program in connection with a charge of having committed a felony, and with being a second-degree persistent felony offender.

In a third indictment, Smallwood is charged with first-degree bail jumping for failing to appear in Letcher District Court for a scheduled preliminary hearing and with being a second-degree persistent felony offender.

• Shelly Nicole Walker, 45, of 226 North Heritage Drive, Jenkins, who is charged with operating a vehicle on suspended/ revoked operator’s license, and first-degree possession of controlled substance (methamphetamine, first offense).

In a second indictment, Walker is charged with first-degree bail jumping for failure to appear for a preliminary hearing at the Letcher County Courthouse in a pending Letcher District Court Case.

• Jesse Lee McBee, 49, of 72 Canary Drive, Millstone, who is accused of driving under the influence with suspended operator’s license (third offense).

Letcher County Sheriff ’s Deputy Seth Whitaker testified in the case.

In a second indictment, McBee is accused of operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol (third offense within 10 years, with aggravator), driving with a suspended operator’s license (third or greater offense within 10 years, with aggravator), and possession of open alcoholic beverage in motor vehicle.

Kentucky State Trooper Michael Burton testified in the case.

• Ryan Wayne Sexton, 37, of 581 Bentley Loop, Jenkins, who is charged with first-degree possession of a forged instrument. The grand jury says Sexton had in his possession a counterfeit $100 U.S. currency bill, which he attempted to pass to the Ermine Double Kwik for payment for goods and merchandise.

Letcher County Sheriff ’s Deputy Mike Enfusse testified in the case.

• Ashley Johnson, 35, of 56 Branded Drive, Whitesburg, who is charged with theft by unlawful taking ($500 or more). The grand jury says Johnson took a cell phone belonging to Jamie Caudill.

In a second indictment, Johnson is charged with first-degree bail jumping for failing to appear in Letcher District Court for a scheduled preliminary hearing.

• Thomas Jeffrey Mullins, 57, of 37 Connie Lane, Cromona, who is charged with first-degree possession of controlled substance (second offense), use/ possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana, and controlled substance not in original container.

• Joshua Lee Pike, 38, of 2066 Hwy. 3410, Mayking, who is charged with first-degree bail jumping for failing to report to the Letcher Circuit Court, and with being a first-degree persistent felony offender.

• Joanna D. Davis, 35, of 166 Scuttle Hole Gap, Whitesburg, who is charged with first-degree bail jumping for failing to report to the Letcher Circuit Court, and with being a second-degree persistent felony offender.

• Judith Kay Taylor, 58, of 617 Blair Branch, Jeremiah, who is charged with first-degree bail jumping for failing to appear for a scheduled pre-trial conference.

• Brianna Cornett, 28, of 5227 Thornton Road, Thornton, who is charged with first-degree bail jumping for failing to appear for a preliminary hearing in a pending felony proceeding, and with being a second-degree persistent felony offender.

In a second indictment, Cornett is charged with first-degree bail jumping for failing to appear in Letcher Circuit Court for a pre-trial conference in a pending felony proceeding, and with being a second-degree persistent felony offender.
