3 charged in 2020 beating at Cowan

Three men accused in the January 2020 robbery and beating of a Cowan man are among 18 people charged in 19 indictments returned by the Letcher County Grand Jury.

The indictments are the result of a long investigation that began on January 27, 2020, when Scott Day, then 60, was able to report to police that he had been beaten unconscious in his Big Cowan home the night before.

The beating, which apparently occurred with a hammer while Day was asleep on his couch, was so severe he lost an eye and had to undergo several reconstructive surgeries at the University of Kentucky hospital in Lexington.

The three men indicted are Christian Collins, 22, of 701 College Dr., Whitesburg; Christian Adams, 23, of 117 Hwy. 7, Apt. 6, Isom; and Jacob McCowan, 19, also known as Jake McCowan, of 143 Rush Drive, Jeremiah.

They are each charged with firstdegree complicity to commit robbery and causing injury to Scott Day using a dangerous instrument (hammer), first-degree complicity to commit theft of a firearm. And first-degree complicity to commit burglary at the home of Day. Collins is also facing a charge of being a firstdegree persistent felony offender.

Kentucky State Trooper Tyler Smith testified in the cases before the indictments were returned.

Others named in indictments are:

• Denver Lee Gibson, 56, also known as Dickie Dog, of 612 Hells Branch Rd., Redfox, who is charged with no operator’s/moped license, manufacturing methamphetamine (second or greater offense), convicted felon in possession of a firearm (handgun), operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol/ substance and on a suspended operator’s license, buy/possess drug paraphernalia, first-degree failure of non-owner operator to maintain required insurance, failure to produce insurance card, all-terrain vehicle violations and unlawful possession of methamphetamine precursor (second or greater offense).

• Robert Chad Brown, 46, of 13 Bed Drive, Whitesburg, who is charged with firstdegree possession of a controlled substance (first offense, methamphetamine), three counts of third-degree possession of a controlled substance (drug unspecified), buy/possess drug paraphernalia, operating a vehicle on suspended/ revoked operator’s license, failure to produce insurance card, no/expired registration receipt, no/expired registration plates, failure of non-owner to maintain required insurance, failure to wear seatbelt and being a first-degree persistent felony offender.

• Clarence Yeary Jr., 43, of 228 Store Hill Rd., Burdine, who is charged with seconddegree robbery when he assaulted Truby Chapman of Vicco by dragging him out of his vehicle in an attempt to steal the vehicle, theft by unlawful taking of vehicle worth $500 or more but under $10,000, two counts of second-degree criminal mischief, second-degree disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, public intoxication of a controlled substance (excluding alcohol), second-degree fleeing or evading police (on foot) and being a first-degree persistent felony offender.

Whitesburg Police Officer Jordan Clemmons testified in the case.

• Jesse Hamilton, 42, of 102 Williams Circle, Jenkins, who is charged with two counts of first-degree wanton endangerment, firstdegree criminal possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine), no operator’s license, improper registration plate, buy/possess drug paraphernalia and tampering with physical evidence.

Jenkins Police Chief Jim Stephens testified in the case.

• Bobby N. Miller, 41, of 421 Kona Dr., Whitesburg, who is charged with firstdegree possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine), use/possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana, failure to wear seatbelt and operator’s license to be in possession.

• Katie Larue, 37, also known as Katie Meade, of 11010 Hwy. 160, Whitesburg, who is charged with first- degree possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine), use/ possession of drug paraphernalia, third-degree possession of a controlled substance, tampering with physical evidence and being a first-degree persistent felony offender.

Letcher County Sheriff’s Deputy James Norris testified in the case.

• Joseph Ingram, 31, of 744 Apple Tree Br., Deane, who is charged with firstdegree criminal possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine), failure of non-owner to maintain required insurance/ security (first offense), no/ expired registration plates, buy/possession drug paraphernalia and being a firstdegree persistent felony offender.

• Johnny Osborne, 54, of 7922 Hwy. 119 South, Eolia, who is charged with third-degree criminal trespassing, theft by unlawful taking or disposition when he entered the home of Edna Mae Burton and/or Christine Mullins and two counts of third-degree terroristic threatening.

• Brennan K. Mullins, 21, of 300 Wrights Hollow Circle, Jenkins, who is charged with second-degree burglary of the dwelling owned by Barbara Fox and thirddegree criminal mischief.

• Bobbie Nicole Stamper, 39, of 1444 Hwy. 1862, Thornton, who is charged with theft by unlawful taking or disposition of a pickup truck belonging to Dominic

Cummings valued at $500 or more but under $10,000, public intoxication excluding alcohol, resisting arrest, first-degree disorderly conduct and being a first-degree persistent felony offender.

• Andrew Vaughn, 28, of 1257 Hwy. 7 South, Jeremiah, who is charged with first-degree possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine, first offense) and first-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance (heroin, first offense).

In a second indictment, Vaughn is charged with first-degree bail jumping.

• Ricky L. Wallace, 34, of Housing Authority, Whitesburg, who is charged with first-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine) and public intoxication under the influence of a controlled substance (excludes alcohol).

• Cecil Shell, 19, of Buck Creek, Whitesburg, who is charged with second-degree escape and tampering with a prisoner monitoring device.

Letcher County Sheriff’s Deputy Ben Fields testified in the case.

• Robert Wayne Heiston III, 41, of 63 Brick St., Jenkins, who is charged with second-degree escape and tampering with a prisoner monitoring device.

• Amanda Sizemore, 33, of 8306 Main St., Pound, Va., who is charged with flagrant non-support of her minor children and being a firstdegree persistent felony offender.
