31 signs stolen, authorities say

The Letcher County E-911 office and the sheriff’s department are asking for information concerning the recent theft of 911 road signs. Thirty-one signs have been stolen or damaged in the past two weeks, according to Brandon Conley, director of the Letcher County E-911 office.

Twelve signs were stolen over the weekend of June 8-10 and 19 were stolen or damaged the night of June 15.

“These signs were put in place by the E-911 office for the protection and well being of the residents of Letcher County,” said Conley.

Conley said this case and those of other signs stolen in the county will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

“Without road signs, ambulances, fire departments and law enforcement agencies may not be able to find a residence in time of an emergency. This could cost someone his or her life or home. If these events were to happen, the result could be a prison sentence for those found guilty,” said Conley.

Conley said it costs $20 to replace a sign and $60 to replace a sign and pole. Five poles were taken with the signs. It will cost at least $820 to replace the stolen signs and poles.

Anyone with information about this case, should call Mike Rose of the Letcher County Sheriff’s Department at 633-2293.
