4 Letcher communities to have July 4 fireworks; alcohol tax pays for one



Fireworks celebrations are planned in four Letcher County communities to commemorate Independence Day.

A fireworks display paid for by the Isom Days Committee will begin at dark on July 3 at the Isom Fairgrounds.

The City of Whitesburg’s Independence Day festivities at River Park begin at 4 p.m. on July 4 with inflatables and food booths. Kaitlyn Good, of Pikeville, will perform from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Good was one of 100 finalists to participate in American Idol auditions in Hollywood during season 12.

The BB King’s All-Star Band from Nashville will headline the event from 7 to 10:30 p.m. This will be the third time the band has performed in Whitesburg. Fireworks will begin after the headliner.

Bring your own chair if you attend.

The City of Fleming-Neon will hold a Fourth of July celebration in downtown Neon beginning at 8 p.m. on July 4 with a performance by the Pure and Simple Band. A fireworks display will begin at dark.

The City of Jenkins’s fireworks display will start at dark on Thursday and can be seen near the new swimming pool site.

Whitesburg’s fireworks show and celebration is paid for with money earned from the city’s tax on alcoholic beverages. Fleming-Neon’s fireworks are sponsored by the city government, the Neon Volunteer Fire Department, American Legion Post 104 and the Neon Days Committee.
