Fireworks celebrations are planned in four Letcher County communities to commemorate Independence Day.
A fireworks display paid for by the Isom Days Committee will begin at dusk on July 3 at the Isom Fairgrounds. The Third Shift band will perform at 7 p.m.
The City of Whitesburg’s Independence Day festivities at River Park begin at 2 p.m. on July 4 with inflatable rides, food booths and face painting. A cornhole tournament starts at 2:30 p.m., and a horseshoe tournament is set for 4 p.m.
Cross Country Bluegrass Band will perform at 2 p.m. Pure & Simple Band will take the stage at 4 p.m., followed by the BB King’s All-Star Band from Nashville at 6 p.m. Sundy Best will headline the event at 8 p.m.
Fireworks will begin after the Sundy Best performance. Whitesburg Mayor James W. Craft said the fireworks display will be bigger and better than last year. Citizens attending are encouraged to bring their own chair..
The City of Fleming-Neon will hold a Fourth of July celebration in downtown Neon beginning at 7 p.m. on Friday with entertainment at the stage on Main Street. A fireworks display will begin at dark.
The City of Jenkins fireworks display will start at dark on Friday and can be seen at Lakeside. Free admission to the swimming pool begins after 6:30 p.m. Free slices of watermelon will be served at the pool.
Whitesburg’s fireworks show and celebration is paid for with money earned from the city’s tax on alcoholic beverages. Fleming-Neon’s fireworks are sponsored by the city government, the Neon Volunteer Fire Department, American Legion Post 104 and the Neon Days Committee.
